Kenya SL28 & SL34: Unique Varieties

According to botanists at Scott Laboratories, SL28 and SL34 are genetic variants. Among them, SL28 possesses mixed lineage from French Mission, Mocha, and Yemeni Typica. The original goal in developing SL28 was to mass-produce coffee beans that combined high quality with resistance to pests and diseases.

Although SL28's later yields didn't meet mass production expectations, its copper-colored leaves and broad bean-shaped seeds produce wonderful sweetness, balance, and complexly varied flavors, along with distinctive citrus and dark plum characteristics. SL34 has similar flavors to SL28, but beyond its complexly varied acidity and wonderful sweet finish, it has a heavier, richer mouthfeel than SL28 and is even cleaner. SL34 possesses French Mission, Bourbon, and more Typica lineage. Its bean appearance is similar to SL28, but it adapts better to sudden heavy rains. It is these two important varieties that have led us to understand the unique Kenyan style: intensely rich fruit acidity, rich mouthfeel, and beautiful balance.

Flavor Profile

Intense lemon and plum aromas in both dry and wet fragrances. When light-roasted and sipped, it reveals stunning floral and lemon aromas, along with sweet-tart juiciness like grapefruit green tea and citrus juice. With a slightly deeper roast, it develops various flavors of honey and raspberry-black plum, while the aftertaste presents the pleasant sweet-tart taste of green tea.

Origin & Processing

This Kenya comes from the Kongyu Processing Station in Kabare Cooperative Society, Kirinyaga region. It uses the Kenyan double-washed processing method and grows on the eastern slopes of the Kenyan mountains in Mathaita-Embu County at altitudes of 1550-1750 meters. The varieties are the classic Kenyan SL28 and SL34. Combined with the large day-night temperature differences and Kenya's red phosphorus soil, sweet and tart notes become the main flavor foundation of this Kenya.

The fresh coffee cherries for this batch of Kongyu AA are picked and processed by 250 farmers from the Kongyu Processing Station under the Kabare Farmers' Cooperative Society. After being depulped, fermented, and washed with water from the nearby Kongyu River, the coffee is placed on African drying beds for drying. Each harvest season, farmers will process nearly 300 tons of fresh coffee cherries. After processing is completed, it will participate in the weekly coffee auctions held every Wednesday in Nairobi. Once selected by licensed exporters, it will be shipped to consumer markets worldwide.

Our Impression

In every previous Kenya, we particularly enjoyed pursuing those sharp, powerful fruit acids. But this Kenya has made me feel gentleness, like facing the sea with a gentle breeze blowing.

About Kenya Coffee

Kenya, located in East Africa, is one of the major coffee-producing countries. Approximately 6 million people nationwide are engaged in the coffee industry, mostly in a combination of small farmers and cooperatives.

Kenya's coffee trees are mostly grown at altitudes of 1400-2000 meters. Growing regions include Ruiri, Thika, Kirinyaga, Mt. Kenya West, Nyeri, Kiambu, and Muranga, primarily on the foothills of Mt. Kenya and Aberdare.

Many coffee-growing regions in Kenya strive to preserve native forest ecosystems, protect natural gene banks, support wild coffee variety propagation, and nurture diverse coffee trees.

In 1930, Kenya's unique varieties SL28 and SL34, cultivated and named by "Scott Laboratories," were born in such a favorable environment.
