Origin Story

Yirgacheffe itself is a small town with approximately 20,000 inhabitants. The three neighboring small regions—Wenago, Kochere, and Gelena Abaya—produce coffee with flavors nearly identical to Yirgacheffe, so they are also classified under the Yirgacheffe regional category. Both culturally and geographically, Yirgacheffe is similar to its neighboring Sidamo, but Yirgacheffe seems uniquely blessed with exceptionally favorable conditions. Top-quality Yirgacheffe coffee features floral notes, bright citrus acidity, lemon-toned aromas, and a silky smooth mouthfeel.

Introduction

This coffee comes from a single farm in Ethiopia, processed by the Wenago Cooperative.

The cooperative is located in the southern part of the Gedeb district and was established in 2005, joining the renowned Yirgacheffe Coffee Farmers Cooperative Union (YCFCU) the same year. It is renowned for producing high-quality natural Yirgacheffe coffee. The Wenago Cooperative serves approximately 300 coffee farmers. YCFCU was established in 2002 and includes 26 other cooperatives, serving over 45,000 coffee farmers.

The Wenago Cooperative is part of the YCFCU cooperative union organization and was established in 2005 as one of 22 primary cooperatives. The Wenago Cooperative is located within the Gedeb area of the Gedeo administrative zone, a remote region within Yirgacheffe, situated 75 kilometers from the local coffee trading hub of Dilla town. The access roads are in poor condition, with a 20-kilometer dirt road from the cooperative to the main paved highway. The altitude is very high, around 1800-1900 meters. Because no chemical fertilizers or pesticides are used during coffee cultivation, the small farmers of Wenago have obtained Skal organic coffee certification recognized by the European Union. Just as Kochere is famous for washed processing, Wenago is particularly outstanding in natural processing. However, both Wenago and Kochere have beans processed by different methods. In recent years, natural processing has become increasingly refined, significantly improving the traditional rough methods used for hundreds of years. Greater attention is paid to harvesting ripe cherries and caring for the drying process, allowing the beans to retain the sweetness of the fruit pulp and subtle, charming fermented wine notes, creating flavors that washed processing cannot achieve.

Flavor Profile

The aroma features rich and distinct fresh strawberry and blueberry fruit notes, raisin aroma, pineapple, mango, complex fruits, citrus-berry notes, syrup, floral notes, juicy May peaches, and other very fresh berry aromas. The finish brings apricot dried fruit and sweet, rich tropical fruit flavors.
