Recently, many people have fallen in love with using moka pots to brew coffee, attracting many friends who want to purchase moka pots. However, with so many moka pot brands and styles available, how should you choose the right one? FrontStreet Coffee will tell you in this article!

The Legendary Bialetti Brand

Among moka pots, there exists a legendary brand—Bialetti. Why is it considered legendary? Because the moka pot was invented by the founder of this brand, Alfonso Bialetti.

Let's go back to a certain day in 1933. While Bialetti was watching his wife use a washing machine, he noticed an interesting phenomenon: there was a metal pipe in the middle of the washing machine that would draw heated soapy water up and spray it onto the clothes. He thought to himself: when water is heated, it creates pressure, and when the pressure is sufficient, it can be drawn up through a small-diameter pipe. So what if we created coffee using water pressure—wouldn't it be richer? And so, the world's first moka pot was born.

As the world's first household moka pot utilizing steam pressure to extract coffee, this invention completely revolutionized the original coffee-making methods of Italians, making coffee preparation simpler and faster. The adorable cartoon character on Bialetti's classic moka pot—the mustachioed little man "Omino"—is its founder Alfonso Bialetti. From this small and lovely image, we can feel how Italians transformed coffee culture into a happy and enjoyable culture.

Therefore, Bialetti's moka pots are most easily recognized by everyone. Its market share once reached as high as 90%, and it still holds over half of the market share today. Besides the Bialetti moka pot brand, there are also some rising stars, such as Bincoo, which is known for its distinctive appearance and is also loved by many people.

Single Valve vs. Double Valve: What's the Difference?

In addition to launching moka pots in different sizes and shapes, what's particularly noteworthy about Bialetti is the difference between single-valve and double-valve versions. FrontStreet Coffee will briefly explain here: the single valve is the most traditional moka pot, with pressure generally around 2-3 bar, while the double valve is newer technology that can provide higher pressure, resulting in richer and finer crema. Therefore, when making a purchase, you can choose according to your needs. If you prefer the classic design, choose the single-valve version; if you prioritize performance, choose the double-valve version.

How to Use a Moka Pot

So how do you use a moka pot? FrontStreet Coffee recommends a simple operating method here.

First, let's understand the structure of a moka pot, using a single-valve moka pot as our blueprint. A moka pot consists of three parts: upper, middle, and lower. The lower chamber holds water, the middle filter basket holds coffee grounds, and the upper chamber collects the extracted coffee liquid. Through steam pressure extraction, water from the lower pot is heated by the stove, creating steam pressure that pushes toward the outlet; the pressure generated by the steam pushes water through the tube into the filter basket, allowing the coffee grounds to be fully heated and extracted; the extracted espresso then moves through the tube up to the upper pot portion and collects there before flowing out.

Coffee Bean Selection

For the coffee beans, FrontStreet Coffee suggests using medium-dark roast. If you're not sure how to choose, you can purchase espresso beans, which are specifically designed for espresso machines and moka pots. Practical Operation Steps

1. Pour hot water into the lower pot until it reaches 0.5cm below the pressure release valve. Using hot water can better shorten the coffee brewing time.

2. Pour the ground coffee into the filter basket, tap it left and right to let the coffee grounds settle naturally downward, using about 20g of coffee beans. Level the surface of the coffee grounds. The purpose of this is to ensure even distribution of space between coffee particles, and not compressing prevents excessive resistance in the coffee bed.

3. Place the filter basket into the lower pot and tightly screw the upper pot to the lower pot.

4. Place it on an electric ceramic stove, turn on the power, and start heating.

5. When the moka pot reaches a certain temperature and makes a distinct "whooshing" sound, set the electric stove to low heat and open the upper pot lid. Coffee liquid and crema will begin to flow out.

6. When the coffee liquid in the upper pot is about halfway full, turn off the electric stove. Move the moka pot to the table. The residual heat and pressure of the moka pot will "push" the remaining coffee liquid into the upper pot.

7. Finally, pour the coffee into a cup and you're done! The crema produced by single-valve moka pots is relatively thin and coarse, and won't last very long—it will dissipate after a short while. However, this year Bialetti also launched a new generation of pressurized moka pots, whose crema performance is a level above that of single-valve pots.
