Introduction to Java Coffee

Java coffee, known in English as Java coffee, is also sometimes translated as Java coffee.

Coffee Cultivation Distribution

Java coffee beans (coffee powder) belong to the Robusta variety, with major production areas distributed across various African countries such as Côte d'Ivoire, Angola, Madagascar Island, as well as the Philippines, Vietnam, and Indonesia (Java).

Cultivation Environment and Major Production Areas

Robusta is cultivated in lowland areas, resistant to high temperatures, drought, heavy rainfall, and pests, with extremely strong adaptability. It can grow very well on flat ground, and harvesting doesn't necessarily require manual labor - it can be done entirely with shaking machines.

In coffee blending, there are two major categories of Robusta coffee that are commonly encountered: A.P. Robusta and W.I.B. Robusta.

Except for W.I.B. which has larger beans, the others have smaller beans. The biggest difference lies in the processing methods after harvesting, resulting in certain differences in appearance, aroma, and taste.

Origin: Java Island, Indonesia.

Grade or Variety: W.I.B. & A.P.

Indonesia was the first colony (under Dutch rule) to start growing coffee trees. The Indonesian archipelago is the world's largest Robusta bean production region. This is known for high-quality Arabica beans, such as Java and Sumatra.

History of Java Coffee

The Dutch were the first to bring coffee to Central and South America in the 1720s. Coffee was transmitted from Dutch colonies to French Guiana and Brazil. During the process of external colonization, the Dutch planted coffee in Malabar, India, and in 1699 brought coffee to Batavia in present-day Indonesia – Java. Dutch colonies once became the main supplier of coffee to Europe. Currently, Indonesia is the world's fourth-largest coffee exporting country.

Later, it was brought to Jamaica by the British. By 1925, coffee cultivation had become a tradition in Central and South America. In the same year, Hawaii also began cultivating coffee, which is the only coffee-producing area in the United States, and Hawaiian coffee is also one of the best coffees in the world.

Currently, 90% of coffee beans exported from Indonesia are Robusta beans, with only 10% being Arabica. Before 1920, due to a major environmental disaster, Indonesia's coffee varieties were all changed to Robusta beans. Therefore, FrontStreet Coffee's Mandheling coffee from Sumatra Island is a rare Arabica bean, a treasure before the discovery of Blue Mountain. The production of such authentic products is also very limited.

Java holds a unique position in Indonesian coffee. Coffee cultivation in Java began as early as the Dutch colonial period. Until the 1920s, Java coffee was recognized worldwide as premium coffee. The unique wet processing method, distinctive Java Typica coffee variety, volcanic ash landscape formed by the IJEN volcano, excellent altitude above 4,500 feet, and historic professional large-scale coffee plantations – these factors make Java coffee outstanding in quality.
