How Many Grams Are in a Spoonful of Coffee? How Much Is Approximately 15g of Coffee Beans?
Out of a virtue of frugality, many friends who are new to coffee often adopt a "save what you can" attitude. As long as they can brew a cup of coffee that doesn't taste bad, they firmly refuse to buy non-essential equipment. For instance, thermometers and electronic scales are considered dispensable by some.
FrontStreet Coffee has also noticed that when people don't have an electronic scale but want to know their actual coffee dosage, they usually rely on life experience to judge, or directly use the most common items around them as substitutes for measurement. The most frequently used substitute for electronic scales is the spoon, an essential item in every household, which Cantonese people习惯 call "chi gang" (spoon).
As a piece of tableware, spoons play an important role in daily life. However, considering that everyone's preferences and habits vary, the purchased sizes, shapes, and depths might differ, leading to variations in the portions they hold. Therefore, FrontStreet Coffee is here to be your hands today, bringing out four convenient spoons at once: the essential porcelain soup spoon for drinking soup, a small stainless steel spoon, a round cupping spoon, and a bean scoop that came with equipment purchase.
A single coffee bean continuously expands during the heating process. The degree of expansion not only determines its particle size but also its density and weight. Based on experience, the deeper the roast, the more the beans expand, resulting in lower density, appearing larger, and having a greater volume after grinding into powder. Simply put, dark roast coffee powder will be fluffier than light roast. When using the same utensil for measurement, the deeper the roast, the less each spoonful will hold.
To provide more friends with usable solutions, FrontStreet Coffee will demonstrate with four coffee beans representing different roast levels (light roast Guodingding, medium-light roast Mozart, medium-dark roast Paradise Bird, and deep roast Golden Mandheling). Then, using the four spoons mentioned above, we will weigh them before grinding and after grinding into powder, recording and organizing the results into tables.
Additionally, since the main purpose of this operation is to help everyone figure out an approximate coffee dosage without an electronic scale, we need to reach a consensus on the definition of "full" first; otherwise, the measured results won't have reference value. To minimize interfering factors as much as possible, FrontStreet Coffee will fill the entire spoon with coffee beans when measuring, while when measuring coffee powder, we will shake it gently like a cafeteria worker to ensure the powder forms a slightly arched state.
Weight of One Spoonful of Coffee Beans
| Stainless Steel Small Spoon | Cupping Spoon | Porcelain Soup Spoon | Bean Scoop | |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Guodingding | 4.9g | 10.2g | 10.1g | 14.1g |
| Mozart | 5.2g | 9.2g | 10g | 13.5g |
| Paradise Bird | 4.9g | 8.3g | 9.1g | 11.5g |
| Golden Mandheling | 4.2g | 7.9g | 8.8g | 12.3g |
Weight of One Spoonful of Coffee Powder
| Stainless Steel Small Spoon | Cupping Spoon | Porcelain Soup Spoon | Bean Scoop | |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Guodingding | 4.6g | 9.6g | 7.8g | 14g |
| Mozart | 4.2g | 7.8g | 7.2g | 12.7g |
| Paradise Bird | 4.1g | 6.8g | 6.6g | 10.5g |
| Golden Mandheling | 3.7g | 6.5g | 6.2g | 9.3g |
How Many Spoons for 15g of Coffee?
Now that we know the corresponding weight of each spoonful of coffee powder/beans, as long as we confirm its roast level, we can roughly figure out the desired coffee dosage.
For example, if you bought a bag of Flower Queen 8.0 coffee beans with flavor descriptions of passion fruit, floral notes, and berries, it indicates they use a light to medium roast level. If the tool you use at home for scooping powder is the small stainless steel spoon, which weighs approximately 5g each time when measuring coffee beans, then you only need 3 spoonfuls to roughly control the dosage close to 15g. Similarly, if the coffee beans are already ground into powder, each small spoonful weighs close to 4g, so scooping 4 full times can achieve 16g of coffee powder.
