As an educational platform, FrontStreet Coffee wouldn't spend money on "blind tasting." We've always advocated the philosophy of "doing it yourself for self-sufficiency." Besides, the materials needed here are readily available in daily life, making it quite easy to create a cup. So today, let's try pairing jasmine flowers with the well-known iced Americano and see how it turns out~

How to Choose Coffee Beans?

To make a delicious jasmine Americano, FrontStreet Coffee believes that neither the selection of jasmine tea nor coffee preparation should be careless. Considering that jasmine drinks belong to the elegant category, FrontStreet Coffee suggests using medium or medium-dark roasted coffee beans for preparation, which makes it easier for us to capture both jasmine fragrance and coffee flavors simultaneously.

If you prefer fruity notes, you can prioritize beans with flavor profiles pointing to berries, apricots, ripe fruits, etc. Coffee like Hawecha, Chaka, and Alo-extracted SOE all pair well with jasmine tea flavor profiles. If you're pursuing a richer coffee texture, consider prioritizing coffee with descriptions like dried fruit, fermented wine aroma, sweet melon, and candy-related descriptors. Coffee like Strawberry Candy, Rose Valley, Mozart, and Sidra can all express fruity notes in espresso while maintaining a rich caramel sensation.

However, if we only have dark-roasted espresso beans at home but want to make a refreshing jasmine iced Americano, FrontStreet Coffee suggests using only a single shot of espresso, as this won't easily mask the floral aroma in the tea.

After some research and learning, FrontStreet Coffee has summarized three different methods for making jasmine iced Americano: using store-bought beverages, quick hot water steeping, and cold brew tea. Everyone can choose according to their preference. (FrontStreet Coffee's versions today are all unsweetened. Friends who prefer sweetness can add 10-15g of syrup according to their taste.)

Using Store-Bought Beverages

When we're committed to making a quick cup to satisfy our cravings, directly using ready-made beverages is undoubtedly the simplest and most hassle-free operation. Moreover, there are numerous jasmine tea products on the market, most of which are inexpensive. They come in both sweetened and unsweetened varieties, and some even allow you to choose concentration levels. So making a simple version of jasmine iced Americano at home can be said to be as easy as turning your hand.

FrontStreet Coffee first tried making it with Oriental Leaf's unsweetened jasmine tea. When consumed alone, it has good palatability with relatively weak jasmine fragrance, and it doesn't clash when combined with coffee (less likely to go wrong). Plus, it's the easiest to purchase.

Quick Hot Water Steeping

Friends who often drink flower tea should know that compared to many pre-made beverages, tea brewed fresh with jasmine flowers better captures the fresh taste from the flowers, resulting in better effects when made into specialty coffee. Therefore, for friends who are in a hurry to go out and happen to have dried jasmine flowers or jasmine tea at home, FrontStreet Coffee suggests steeping with hot water first, then combining.

The steps to prepare the tea are not complicated. First, prepare a thermos (an ordinary teapot works too), add 1-1.5 grams of jasmine flowers, pour in 160ml of high-temperature hot water, steep for 4-5 minutes, then filter out the jasmine flowers.

Cold Brew Tea

FrontStreet Coffee has mentioned in many articles that compared to hot water brewing, coffee extracts much less efficiently in cold water, with fewer interfering factors, releasing mostly small molecular substances. Therefore, bitterness usually accounts for a smaller proportion, acidity isn't as sharp, and the texture is relatively lighter and rounder. The same applies to cold brew tea.

For convenience, FrontStreet Coffee is using commonly available jasmine green tea bags from the market, with a ratio of one tea bag to 100g of pure water. This way, the cold brew tea will have more pronounced jasmine aroma. Just like making cold brew coffee, first find a spacious, sealable container, place 2 jasmine tea bags, then pour in 200g of room temperature water, seal and place in the refrigerator for 3 hours. After steeping, simply remove the filter bag.

Preparation Steps

Step 1: Prepare a clean, large-capacity cup, then add 2/3 of ice (80g), and pour bottled jasmine tea to 8/10 of the cup's height.

Step 2: FrontStreet Coffee selected Ethiopian Hawecha 8.0 SOE coffee beans, extracting a double shot using the store's standard formula: 20 grams of coffee extracted for 31 seconds to yield 40 grams of coffee liquid, then gently poured over the surface. (The ratio of coffee to jasmine tea is approximately 1:5)

Since all the jasmine teas mentioned above emphasize fresh fragrance with an overall lighter taste, serving as a base that won't overpower the coffee's own aroma. Paired with the citrus fruit sweetness and acidity from Hawecha SOE and the characteristic rich texture of espresso, the entire jasmine iced Americano has both the mellow richness of coffee while maintaining a refreshing floral-fruity aroma profile.

Finally, it's worth noting that because hot tea will quickly melt the ice cubes, causing the entire base to become diluted and weak, when using the second method, it's best to make slight adjustments to the ratio as well, controlling the coffee to jasmine tea ratio at 1:4, meaning 40g of espresso to 160g of freshly brewed tea. At the same time, add 20-30g more ice or use a chilled cup to maintain the coffee's iced texture.
