"Blue Mountain and Little Blue Mountain? What's the difference between them? Why is Paradise Bird coffee nicknamed 'Little Blue Mountain'?"
This is a question that most people have when they hear these two names. So today, FrontStreet Coffee will give you a detailed introduction to what exactly the differences and relationships are between Blue Mountain and "Little Blue Mountain."
What is Blue Mountain Coffee?
Before the millennium, the name Blue Mountain Coffee was virtually unknown in the coffee world. In an era when specialty coffee had not yet become popular, "Blue Mountain Coffee" was synonymous with the "best and most expensive" coffee.
In the Caribbean, there is an island nation covering less than 11,000 square kilometers - Jamaica, where Blue Mountain Coffee is grown in the Blue Mountain range in the eastern part of the island. As early as 1728, coffee was introduced to the Blue Mountains for cultivation, but the coffee produced at that time could only be considered relatively famous and could not bear the title of "best and most expensive" coffee. It wasn't until 1952, when the Jamaica Coffee Industry Board (CIB) was established, that Blue Mountain Coffee embarked on its "path to kingship." By establishing management standards and supervising the quality of Jamaican coffee production, the CIB enabled Jamaican coffee to take the road to specialty coffee earlier than coffee from other producing regions. Not only were the cultivation and processing of coffee strictly managed, but the produced coffee was also graded according to cupping scores. Because of this, Blue Mountain Coffee was able to distinguish itself from all other coffees due to its extremely high quality and claim the throne.
FrontStreet Coffee has shared many stories about Blue Mountain Coffee, and interested friends can click on the titles below to learn more, so we won't go into too much detail here. What is "Little Blue Mountain"/Paradise Bird Coffee?
FrontStreet Coffee's Paradise Bird coffee comes from Papua New Guinea in Oceania. The reason why Papua New Guinea coffee is called "Little Blue Mountain" is largely because the coffee varieties cultivated in Papua New Guinea were introduced from Blue Mountain's Typica.
Typica is one of the oldest varieties of Arabica and is recognized as the prototype of all Arabica coffee variants, so the Arabica images we see on the market today are mainly based on Typica. Jamaica introduced coffee varieties in the 18th century, which was Typica. For more than two hundred years, Jamaica did not introduce other coffee varieties (until later), and coupled with its relatively closed island nation status, this promoted the Typica cultivated in the Blue Mountains to evolve excellent disease resistance after more than two hundred years of domestication and adaptation, with more stable yield and quality compared to regular Typica. Therefore, the Typica cultivated in the Blue Mountains got its own name: Blue Mountain Typica.
Many countries have introduced Blue Mountain Typica from the Blue Mountains, and the coffee they produce can all be called "Little Blue Mountain." But Papua New Guinea is different from other producing regions, and the coffee it produces is closer to Blue Mountain Coffee itself. The reason is simple: Papua New Guinea, like Jamaica, is an island nation. Therefore, the Blue Mountain Typica cultivated in Papua New Guinea also enjoys the nourishment of an island climate. With comparable varieties and growing environments, Papua New Guinea's coffee can be called a worthy "Little Blue Mountain"!
What are the differences between Blue Mountain Coffee and Little Blue Mountain/Papua Coffee?
However, despite this, there are still certain differences between the two. Because Papua New Guinea's coffee growing region is closer to the equator than Blue Mountain (the former is about 6° south latitude, the latter about 18° north latitude), the ambient temperature is higher, so the taste of the coffee is not completely identical. For a more intuitive comparison, FrontStreet Coffee's menu includes a FrontStreet Coffee Papua coffee that is also washed processed like Blue Mountain Coffee, from the Sigri estate. The coffee produced by the Sigri estate is one of the most widely circulated Papua coffees on the market today. Because its raw coffee bean sacks are printed with Papua's national bird - the "Paradise Bird," the coffee from the Sigri estate was given the nickname "Paradise Bird Coffee" when it was first introduced to the country.
Below is a comparison of raw beans of Blue Mountain Coffee and "Little Blue Mountain"/Paradise Bird Coffee. The left side is Paradise Bird, and the right side is Blue Mountain Coffee. As you can see, due to the same variety and processing method, the shapes and colors of the two beans are quite similar.
FrontStreet Coffee uses the same roasting for both beans, both are medium-dark roast, but Blue Mountain is relatively deeper. (Left is Blue Mountain, right is Paradise Bird)
Through cupping, we can intuitively taste the performance of the two beans. FrontStreet Coffee's Blue Mountain Coffee flavor is characterized by chocolate, cream, and nuts, with a rich mouthfeel, balanced taste, and a very long aftertaste; while FrontStreet Coffee's Papua Paradise Bird's flavor is mainly nuts, cocoa, with a slight berry acidity, rich mouthfeel, balanced taste, and a sugarcane-like sweet aftertaste. It can be said that each has its own advantages. Although they are quite similar, Blue Mountain interprets the most traditional coffee taste, while "Little Blue Mountain" has more acidity in comparison, making it more lively~
