Typica Variety Characteristics

Jamaica's coffee variety is primarily Typica, one of the oldest existing coffee varieties. This variety is particularly suitable for cultivation in high-altitude areas, where it can produce excellent flavor and quality. However, this variety is also quite fragile, highly susceptible to leaf rust, and vulnerable to nematodes and berry disease, with relatively low yields.

According to the Jamaican Agricultural Commodities Regulatory Authority (JACRA), only Typica variety coffee grown in four parishes—St. Andrew, St. Thomas, Portland, and St. Mary—at altitudes between 915-1700 meters can be named Jamaica Blue Mountain Coffee. Coffee produced in other regions can only be exported as Jamaica High Mountain Coffee or Jamaica Prime Coffee.

Meticulous Processing and Grading

Due to high altitudes, cultivation management and harvesting are more challenging. The harvesting process is almost entirely completed by local skilled female workers who select perfectly ripe coffee beans. The beans are then sent to processing stations for washed processing, with dedicated personnel responsible for quality supervision throughout. JACRA also grades coffee based on green bean specifications, defect rates, cupping flavors, and other criteria. Jamaica Blue Mountain Coffee is divided into four grades: No. 1, No. 2, No. 3, and PB (hand-selected peaberries). All exports must pass JACRA quality inspection. The highest grade, Jamaica Blue Mountain No. 1, requires bean specifications between 17-18 screen size, defect rate below 2%, moisture content around 10-12.5%, and cupping flavor that meets standards.
