What Does Mocha Coffee Mean? How to Make Salted Mocha Coffee? What's the Difference Between Mocha and Latte?
As we all know, in the world of espresso-based coffee, mocha refers to a chocolate-infused milk coffee. The presence of chocolate makes the coffee's texture richer and its aroma sweeter. Enjoying a hot mocha during autumn and winter is incredibly heartwarming!
In recent years, however, a mocha variation known as "Salted Mocha" (also called Cheesy Salted Mocha or Butter Salted Mocha) has taken the internet by storm. Because netizens claimed this was a "specially crafted mocha" that sold out in coffee shops during autumn and winter, FrontStreet Coffee decided to give it a try with a skeptical attitude. The result? It was actually quite excellent!!!
So today, FrontStreet Coffee is here to share how to make this viral Salted Mocha~
Ingredients for Making "Salted Mocha"
Are the ingredients for making this coffee complex or simple? To be honest, it's both. Why? The simplicity lies in how easy it is to gather the materials. The trouble comes from how time-consuming some of the ingredients are to prepare. Why? Because we need a richer milk to enhance the overall texture of the coffee, so we need to make condensed milk! The process of making condensed milk takes a full day, which is quite a wait, making it somewhat troublesome. (Of course, if you want to buy it directly, just pretend FrontStreet Coffee never said anything.)
Besides condensed milk, we also need to prepare: espresso, chocolate sauce, unsweetened cocoa powder, and salt. The chocolate sauce gives the entire coffee a more suitable and natural chocolate sweetness, while the unsweetened cocoa powder helps control the concentration of chocolate flavor.
For the espresso, we'll stick with a double shot~ FrontStreet Coffee is still using the Sunflower Warm Blend coffee beans, which have distinct whiskey notes, butter cookie flavors, and berry notes that pair perfectly with chocolate! Once we have all the ingredients ready, we can start making the Salted Mocha!
How to Make "Salted Mocha"?
First, we can place the salt, chocolate sauce, and cocoa powder in the container that will receive the espresso. Here, FrontStreet Coffee uses 1g of salt, 5g of cocoa powder, and 15ml of chocolate sauce.
Next, we extract the espresso! Today, FrontStreet Coffee's extraction formula uses 20g of coffee grounds to extract 38ml of liquid in 32 seconds. Remember to place the container with the ingredients directly under the extraction port to catch the espresso~
After extraction, use a bamboo whisk to stir until there are no visible particles floating on the surface. Then use a strainer to filter out any undissolved clumps of cocoa powder.
Next, steam the milk for foam and create latte art all in one go! A steaming hot Salted Mocha is complete! (Here we use 190ml of milk, with foam thickness similar to that of a latte)
Before drinking, we can sprinkle some cocoa powder or cheese crumbs on the surface of the coffee, mainly to enhance the aroma, and then enjoy! FrontStreet Coffee took the first big sip!! You know what? This Salted Mocha is incredibly fragrant! The whiskey notes from the Warm Sun Blend combined with chocolate, creating a liqueur-filled chocolate flavor that's wonderfully sweet! Following that are notes of butter cookies and a very rich, mellow texture. This mellow texture mainly comes from the condensed milk. Moreover, because of the high milk concentration, it creates some cheesy flavors when combined with salt. So you can imagine, the salty aroma of cheese combined with the sweetness of liqueur-filled chocolate makes this coffee incredibly rich and satisfying with just one sip!
Many friends might think this is where FrontStreet Coffee would end the article, but NO NO NO! That would be underestimating FrontStreet Coffee. Because this coffee is very rich, it also makes an excellent iced version. At this point, some friends might ask: Who drinks iced coffee in cold weather?
"Does Guangdong even have winter?"
So let's start making our iced Salted Mocha! The ingredients needed for iced Salted Mocha are the same as for the hot version, just replace a small amount of milk with ice cubes. For preparation, we can choose to make it conventionally like an iced latte, or use another popular method from the internet—"Shake"! (Remember to prepare a shaker)
How to do it specifically? First, just like making the hot Salted Mocha, combine the espresso, chocolate sauce, powder, and salt. (Because the ice will melt and dilute the flavor, you can increase the chocolate sauce by 5ml here, and also slightly increase the salt) Then pour it into a shaker filled with ice cubes! (Here we use 120g of ice)
Next, we can start shaking! Shake until the entire shaker is filled with foam, then you can stop!
Then pour this chocolate espresso foam into the prepared cup.
Finally, add the appropriate amount of milk, and a rich, refreshing iced Salted Mocha is complete!
Compared to the hot Salted Mocha, the iced version doesn't have as sweet an aroma, but it tastes refreshing and rich, with flavor that doesn't lose to the hot version at all. In fact, FrontStreet Coffee thinks its sweetness might be even higher! Well, that's all for today. We highly recommend chocolate lovers try this when they have time~
