Soda Water: The Bubbly Refreshment of Childhood Summers

Soda water, as carbonated beverages are known, is an essential drink for countless friends during childhood summers. Because carbonated drinks have very rich bubbles, besides their advantages of high sweetness and good taste, another reason for their popularity is the "stimulating sensation" brought by these bubbles.

When carbonated drinks enter the mouth, these bubbles filled with carbon dioxide burst one after another due to impact. This creates a slight numbness and tingling sensation that can be quite addictive.

Bubble Iced Americano: Coffee's Answer to Carbonation

In the coffee world, there's actually a specialty product just like this - Bubble Iced Americano! It's a very popular specialty coffee in recent years, made with sparkling water and espresso. Because the water that originally dilutes the coffee is replaced with sparkling water, the addition of bubbles gives the coffee a more unique texture. So with the arrival of summer, this product is always in high demand at various coffee shops!

The Rise of Coffee-Cola: A Bold Experiment

Recently on various media websites, FrontStreet Coffee has frequently seen posts about using cola instead of sparkling water to make bubble Americanos. It's said that this method creates a more stimulating taste and allows one to experience the double joy of cola and coffee in one go - a special drink that's a celebration for both coffee and cola lovers! This has made FrontStreet Coffee eager to try it themselves.

In fact, major carbonated beverage manufacturers have already done this a long time ago. After all, tastes vary, and if one only sticks to tradition, the audience will be greatly limited. So in 2006, the giant Coca-Cola launched a coffee-flavored Coca-Cola called "Coca-Cola Blak" to expand into more markets. This product was only sold in Europe, North America, and other regions with high coffee demand. It was thought that such a product would be favored by consumers, but unexpectedly, the response was mediocre. The product was even discontinued just two years after its launch. This shows that consumers' acceptance of this product was not high.

However, in the following years, manufacturers have successively started experimenting with coffee-cola combinations, which shows people's persistence with this product. But somehow it never really caught on, which greatly piqued FrontStreet Coffee's curiosity. So today, FrontStreet Coffee dares to try this fusion of coffee and cola to see what kind of taste it really has!

The Extraction Experiment

The materials needed for preparation are very simple - just espresso and cola! The beans used for espresso extraction are still the Warm Sun Blend, which yields coffee flavors of: whiskey aroma, butter cookies, and sweet and sour berries! Today's extraction parameters are 20g, 30 seconds, 38ml. As for the cola... quick question: are you team Pepsi or team Coca-Cola?

Anyway, FrontStreet Coffee is team Coca-Cola, so naturally the cola used today is Coca-Cola from '86! The ratio is 1:4:2, with 40ml coffee, 160ml cola, and 80g ice. Once everything is prepared, we can start making it!

Ingredients for cola coffee experiment

Although it's simple to make - just pour cola and espresso into a glass with ice - but just like with bubble iced Americano, if you pour the espresso too forcefully, it will cause a violent reaction between the coffee and cola, creating many bubbles that overflow the cup, significantly increasing our workload. So we need to be careful when pouring the espresso, trying to pour slowly along the ice (or edge).

After pouring, stir well and we can start enjoying it! (Not too vigorously)

The Unexpected Taste Test

Unexpectedly, one sip and the intense flavor that rushed to the head directly shattered FrontStreet Coffee's fantasy of deliciousness. This cola iced Americano not only lacked coffee flavor but also lacked cola flavor. When mixed together, they formed a familiar yet distinctive taste - the taste of Isatis root!!!

Let's put it this way - it's like drinking a non-sweet carbonated Isatis root drink! FrontStreet Coffee initially thought the problem was with the ratio, which led to such a strange taste, so they conducted a series of experiments including adjusting ratios and removing espresso oils. The results of these experiments all told FrontStreet Coffee the same thing: this! is! just! how! it! tastes!

So, FrontStreet Coffee concludes with one sentence: cola iced Americano is quite good, but there won't be a next time!
