African Coffee: Global Recognition and Origins
African coffee enjoys considerable recognition in the global coffee market, as Ethiopia is widely acknowledged as the birthplace of coffee. Additionally, there are many other outstanding coffee-producing countries in Africa, such as Kenya, Ethiopia's neighboring country.
Kenya's Coffee History and Development
Although Kenya borders Ethiopia, the birthplace of coffee, Kenya's coffee industry developed relatively late. It was first introduced to Kenya by French missionaries from Réunion Island in the nineteenth century and developed well. Today, Kenyan coffee is renowned for its multi-layered flavors and juice-like acidity, earning favor among many coffee professionals.
Geography and Climate of Kenya
Located in East Africa, Kenya is a country traversed by the equator. Except for the coastal plains and flat areas, most of the country consists of highlands with an average altitude of 1,500 meters. The eastern branch of the East African Rift Valley cuts through the highlands from north to south, dividing them into eastern and western parts. Many volcanoes also stand within Kenya's territory, among which the dormant volcanic Mount Kenya in the central highlands reaches an altitude of 5,199 meters, making it the second highest peak in Africa.
Kenya lies in the tropical monsoon region, so most areas have a tropical savanna climate. The coastal regions are relatively hot and humid, while the highlands have a mild climate. March to June and October to December are the rainy seasons, with temperatures ranging between 12-24°C throughout the year. High-altitude mountainous areas, volcanic soil, abundant sunlight, and appropriate rainfall make the country's agriculture and tourism well-developed.
Kenya's Coffee Growing Regions
Coffee is primarily grown in the central and western regions of Kenya. In the central region, there are well-known growing areas such as Nyeri, Kiambu, and Kirinyaga. These coffee-producing regions surround the dormant volcanic Mount Kenya and benefit from fertile volcanic soil, suitable sunlight and rainfall, cultivating Kenya's highest quality coffee. About 60% of Kenya's coffee is produced here.
Mount Kenya covers 142,000 hectares with elevations ranging from 1,600 to 5,199 meters. It became a UNESCO protected area in 1978, making its natural resources exceptionally rich.
The Kirinyaga Region
In recent years, the Kirinyaga region (also known as Kiri-Nyaga) has gradually come into prominence. This region is located in central Kenya, near the high-altitude Mount Kenya. Coffee is grown at altitudes between 1,300-1,900 meters, where the fertile volcanic soil, abundant rainfall, and cool climate produce coffee known for its intense flavor, rich layers, and solid body. Together with the Nyeri region, Kirinyaga is recognized as one of Kenya's two finest producing areas.
According to local understanding, the Kikuyu people call Mount Kenya "Kirinyaga" or "Kere-Nyaga" (meaning "white mountain" in the local language), and they have revered this mountain as the home of their omnipotent god, Ngai, since ancient times.
Coffee Production in Kirinyaga
Producers in the Kirinyaga region are mostly small-scale coffee farmers who belong to cooperatives. The cooperatives provide washing stations where farmers send their coffee cherries for processing into green beans.
Tasting Kirinyaga Coffee
To experience the coffee flavors from this region, FrontStreet Coffee acquired washed Kirinyaga Blackberry Queen coffee beans and applied a medium-light roast.
After roasting, FrontStreet Coffee conducted a cupping session. The dry aroma presented notes of berries and subtle purple floral scents. After adding hot water, aromas of dark plum and lemon emerged. Upon tasting, bright purple fruit acidity is apparent, with flavors of dark plum, lemon, berries, and plum-like notes, with a slight sweet aftertaste and a tea-like smooth mouthfeel.
