The Century Egg Coffee Phenomenon

Recently, a coffee shop in Nanchang, Jiangxi Province, suddenly came up with a "century egg coffee" creation that instantly went viral across the internet.

Unlike other creative coffees with outrageous combinations that quickly fade after discussion, this product has been trending for over a month. Not only has it drawn continuous criticism from netizens in mainland China, but people from Hong Kong, Macau, and Taiwan regions have also started "century egg coffee drinking challenges" on various social platforms.

Many netizens from Taiwan reported that people can now be seen bringing century eggs to convenience stores, Starbucks, and independent coffee shops. They buy materials for lattes or order an iced latte, get a new cup, then proceed to crush the century egg and mix it with coffee...

Taiwan Street Experiments

Taiwan's Sanli News even conducted a street experiment, testing people's reactions to century egg coffee without informing them about the special ingredient.

Most interviewees, after taking a few sips, found it actually quite acceptable. The texture was described as chewy and bouncy, somewhat like grass jelly, without too many strange flavors. Some interviewees mentioned that except for the slightly fishy taste from the yolk part, it was actually drinkable, with some even wanting to add tofu to it.

However, some interviewees who were more sensitive to the taste of century eggs began to gag after the first sip.

But when asked if they would drink it again, everyone shook their heads!

Expanding the Challenge

In addition, Taiwanese netizens even challenged themselves with whole century eggs paired with instant noodles, eating them dry?! They claimed it was a divine way of eating... which scared me into quickly eating a bowl of instant noodles with a tea egg (what a relief).

Netizens from Hong Kong also took on the century egg coffee challenge... with similar results. Some felt that the white part of the century egg actually had no particular taste, though it had a slight ammonia smell that could be masked by the coffee flavor, making it acceptable. Those who rejected it mostly did so because they didn't like century eggs to begin with.

In Macau, netizens not only challenged themselves with century egg coffee but also took on salted egg coffee! I truly admire everyone's courage.

Final Thoughts

As someone who raises small parrots, I don't have much resistance to the taste of century eggs myself. However, looking at century egg coffee as a whole, I really can't bring myself to try it... those who understand will understand.

Let's just say, when it comes to heavily seasoned coffees like this, we should just watch and appreciate from afar rather than taking on the challenge lightly.
