Have you ever felt bewildered when looking at the drink names on the menu while walking into a coffee shop?
Today's coffee shops offer an overwhelming variety of products. This can be daunting for first-time visitors or those who rarely visit coffee shops. What should you do? First, don't be nervous. Don't think drinking coffee is something sophisticated—just approach it like ordering at a restaurant!
Solution 1: Order Iced Americano or Latte
If you want black coffee, try iced Americano. If you're worried that black coffee might be too bitter, the iced Americano preparation method reduces the expression of coffee bitterness. If you still find it bitter, you can ask the barista for some milk. Adding a small amount of milk can improve the taste of Americano!
If you prefer milk coffee, try Caffe Latte. Latte is a coffee product with a higher proportion of milk, which better neutralizes the bitterness in coffee. It tastes great both hot and cold! It's a product that's easier for people to accept.
If you want something sweet, you can choose flavored lattes such as vanilla latte, hazelnut latte, caramel latte, floral latte... these are all sweet! Note that matcha latte and red tea latte don't contain coffee.
Solution 2: Ask the Barista
Just like when ordering at a restaurant, if you don't know what to order, you can ask the waiter for recommendations. The same applies in coffee shops. When you don't know what to order, you can ask the barista! They will patiently help you choose your coffee.
You just need to describe to the barista what kind of flavor you want—whether you need milk, whether you want it sweet, iced or hot—and the barista will help you select the right coffee product.
Solution 3: Read the Menu Explanations Below
If you're shy or worried about embarrassment, the editor has compiled a menu explanation for everyone. When you really don't dare to ask, you can look here!
Espresso
Simple explanation: Extremely concentrated, very small amount of coffee liquid
This is a coffee liquid extracted by an espresso machine (the square/rectangular machine at the counter) through high temperature and high pressure. If you're new to coffee, we don't recommend choosing this because it's truly too strong and bitter! It usually contains only a few dozen milliliters.
Single Origin Espresso (SOE)
Simple explanation: Espresso with a fresher taste
SOE means using coffee beans from a specific region to make espresso, with the emphasis on highlighting the coffee flavors from a particular origin.
The most common Ethiopian beans (such as Yirgacheffe, Sidamo, and Guji) used for SOE will have sweet and sour flavors, making them taste fresher compared to the typical espresso in coffee shops, which uses blended beans from two or more regions and has a rich, mellow taste.
Americano
Simple explanation: Diluted espresso with water
This is a product made by adding water to espresso. It has rich coffee aroma, moderate concentration, and can be adjusted according to your taste. If you find your shop's Americano too strong or bitter, you can add more water to adjust it! You can also add an appropriate amount of milk to adjust.
Caffe Latte
Simple explanation: Milk + Espresso
If you want to see coffee art, choose hot latte! Hot latte has delicate, smooth milk foam, with a balance of milk aroma and coffee fragrance, and a rich, smooth taste. Iced latte is refreshing and rich, allowing you to experience both the richness of coffee and the refreshing smoothness of iced milk.
Oat-milk Coffee Latte
Simple explanation: Oat milk + Espresso
Oat milk is not a dairy product; it's a smooth, rich oat pulp. If you have lactose intolerance or milk allergies, you can choose oat milk latte.
Raw Coconut Coffee Latte
Simple explanation: Coconut meat and coconut juice mixture + Espresso
The mixture of coconut meat and coconut juice is called thick coconut milk, which has a very strong coconut aroma and a smooth, thick texture. Most thick coconut milk is sweet, so if you want sweet coffee, you can also choose raw coconut latte!
Cappuccino
Simple explanation: Milk coffee with cotton candy-like foam
Like latte, it uses milk + espresso, but the foam is thicker and denser. The first sip feels like eating cotton candy—rich and dense in texture, with a balance of milk and coffee aromas. Note: Cappuccino doesn't come in an iced version!
Flat White
Simple explanation: Milk coffee with a stronger coffee flavor
Flat white preparation is similar to latte, but the coffee flavor is stronger than latte, and the portion is smaller than latte. If you like milk coffee but don't want too much milk, we recommend choosing flat white—it has a rich coffee flavor and a smooth, mellow taste.
Dirty
Simple explanation: Only iced, not stirred, distinct layers, milk coffee with strong coffee flavor
This is a product made with chilled fresh milk/purified milk, with espresso slowly poured on top of the milk, allowing it to float on the milk surface.
When drinking Dirty, you don't need to stir—just drink it in large sips. The layered texture is fascinating. From strong to light, from deep to shallow, the first sip is rich coffee, and the last sip is the sweetness of milk.
Coffee Mocha
Simple explanation: Milk coffee with chocolate/dark cocoa
Essentially, it's a latte with chocolate sauce/chocolate powder added, available hot or cold. Chocolate lovers shouldn't miss this!
Cold Brew/Ice Drip Coffee
Simple explanation: Cold-extracted iced black coffee with clean, full, and smooth taste
This is different from iced Americano! Cold brew is a black coffee made by soaking in cold water at low temperature, with a rich and full taste; ice drip is a black coffee made by filtering with ice water, with a rich and refreshing taste.
Different coffee beans will produce different coffee flavors. When ordering, you can ask the barista about the taste! Both coffees come without milk or sugar by default, but can be added if needed.
Hand Drip
Simple explanation: Drip black coffee with overall balance, clean taste, and distinct aromatic flavor layers
The taste is cleaner than espresso and more balanced overall; it better expresses the charming aroma of coffee beans compared to cold brew and ice drip. Hand drip allows you to choose beans! Different coffee beans have different flavor expressions.
If you like fruity acidity, try Ethiopian coffee beans! If you prefer mild acidity, try Panamanian beans! If you enjoy dried fruit flavors, try Costa Rican coffee beans... Or if you have any preferred flavors, you can tell the barista, and they will help you select suitable beans.
