Americano coffee is made by diluting espresso with hot/ice water. Generally, people who order iced Americano aim to enjoy a beverage without the burden of calories, or because iced Americano coffee offers great value, making it a popular "tool" for socializing.

Origin of Americano Coffee

Regarding the origin of Americano coffee, there's a widely circulated but unverified anecdote: it was invented by Italian baristas for American soldiers during World War II. Soldiers found that standard espresso was too bitter and too strong for their taste, as they were accustomed to drinking milder "drip" coffee at home.

To provide them with a more palatable beverage, Italian baristas came up with the idea of diluting the intense, rich espresso with hot water to make it more approachable. Even today in America, ordering "black coffee" will get you a cup of drip-style black coffee, while in restaurants and coffee shops in Europe and other regions, it's more likely to be interpreted as an Americano made by diluting espresso with water.

How to Make Americano Coffee

Regarding how much water to add to espresso for an Americano, there's actually no specific standard ratio. Some claim that a 1:2 espresso-to-water ratio is the "standard" Americano, while others prefer a 1:1 ratio for a stronger flavor. In reality, coffee shops may offer various versions of Americano—for instance, some customers prefer bolder flavors, so they make Americano with a 1:4 ratio, while some chain coffee shops might use a 1:8 ratio with warm or ice water, depending on the espresso concentration and customer preferences.

FrontStreet Coffee's daily Americano preparation uses their house-roasted "Sunflower Warm Sunshine Espresso Blend," which combines Yirgacheffe natural coffee beans with Honduras Sherry coffee beans. Using a medium-dark roast level, it features flavors of vanilla, cream, nuts, wine-like notes, and berries.

For espresso extraction, FrontStreet Coffee uses 20g of extra-fine ground coffee powder, injecting 94°C hot water under 10 bar pressure from the coffee machine to quickly extract 40g of coffee liquid, with a total extraction time of 27-32 seconds. After the espresso extraction is complete, hot water/ice water mixture is added at a 1:6 ratio.

If you don't have an espresso machine at home, you can purchase ready-to-drink espresso liquid or freeze-dried espresso online, then mix in an appropriate amount of water according to your personal taste preferences~
