The Journey of Moses Chan: From Coffee Enthusiast to Coffee Brand Owner

"To me, coffee is blood, a part of my body."

— Moses Chan, recognized as the coffee connoisseur in the entertainment industry

Moses Chan enjoying coffee

Moses Chan not only loves drinking coffee but is also deeply knowledgeable about it. From roasting coffee beans to grinding coffee powder, he has mastered every detail. Therefore, in 2009 and 2012, Hong Kong's TVB invited Moses Chan to host coffee-themed travel and food programs "Tasting Coffee" and "Tasting Coffee II."

Tasting Coffee Series: A Global Coffee Journey

Tasting Coffee program coverage

In the first season, Moses Chan traveled to Italy, Venice, Denmark, Indonesia, Kenya, Taiwan, and other locations, introducing local coffee cultures, explaining various coffee knowledge to viewers, and visiting different coffee experts to share their stories with coffee.

Coffee culture exploration

In the second season, Moses Chan visited Jamaica and Australia. Not only did he help viewers gain a deeper understanding of Blue Mountain coffee and Australian coffee culture, but he also provided more in-depth professional knowledge from different fields of the coffee world, helping everyone better appreciate the beauty of coffee.

The Textbook Impact and Brand Evolution

The "Tasting Coffee" series can be said to have become a "textbook" that many people have watched during their coffee learning journey. After the "Tasting Coffee" program, Moses Chan became even more obsessed with specialty coffee and in 2015 launched his own coffee brand. From bean selection, roasting to brewing, he handled everything personally from a professional perspective.

Ten years later, this year TVB once again invited Moses Chan, along with another artist who is also obsessed with coffee, Benjamin Yuen, to film a new coffee-themed program "Haoyou Coffee."

Haoyou Coffee program filming

Due to different pandemic prevention policies in various regions, although "Haoyou Coffee" may not be as rich in content as "Tasting Coffee," it approaches coffee more from the perspective of general consumers and baristas. The program not only includes the hosts explaining coffee knowledge but also features different coffee professionals and coffee consumers discussing their views on coffee.

Observations and Insights

For the author of this article, the biggest impressions from these two programs are twofold: first, that specialty coffee is receiving more and more attention, love, research, and innovation; second, that Moses Chan's attitude toward coffee over these 13 years is truly worth learning from.

From 12 years ago, when he introduced local coffee cultures through people from different regions to help everyone understand different countries' attitudes toward coffee; to 10 years ago, when he introduced coffee cultivation and production through coffee growers and researchers from different countries to share more stories from various origins; to now being able to see the dedication and innovation of coffee professionals, as well as general consumers having different understandings and perspectives on specialty coffee culture—these three programs are like a documentary series, witnessing the development of specialty coffee together with everyone through different perspectives.

Moses Chan's Coffee Philosophy

Moses Chan was once asked about his attitude toward coffee in a 2016 program interview, and he answered: "Live and learn, the more I learn about coffee, the more I feel like a beginner."

Moses Chan sharing coffee knowledge

He believes that good coffee should be accessible to everyone, and people shouldn't have to spend a lot of money to drink a quality cup of coffee. Coffee should be something to enjoy, a very happy thing, so he has always placed great importance on the quality of all products from his brand. Six years later, Moses Chan's coffee brand is still operating very well and has even opened multiple branches.

His success is certainly not just because he has money and fame, but because of his humble and sincere learning attitude, as well as his professionalism and dedication to everything related to coffee. In the new program, we can see his confidence and professionalism when explaining coffee knowledge, and when different coffee professionals and consumers share their experiences, he listens very carefully and discusses coffee with everyone with a learning attitude.

The Path to Success in Coffee

Whether it's Moses Chan or others who are considered very successful in the coffee industry or who have persisted in their coffee dreams to this day, their success is inseparable from their hard work—they are truly very diligent! They cherish every opportunity that can help them improve themselves.

Whether it's reading books and researching, analyzing and exchanging different views and development trends with industry professionals, or sharing feedback and opinions from general consumers, they study everything seriously, then research, improve, and enhance themselves day after day. At the same time, they manage quality control and personnel from a professional perspective.
