Latte Art Tutorial: Leaf Pattern Rosetta Step-by-Step Process and What Milk to Use for Latte Art

Published: 2026-01-27 Author: FrontStreet Coffee
Last Updated: 2026/01/27, Today FrontStreet Coffee is sharing a new basic latte art pattern – the Leaf! This leaf pattern is created using a technique nearly identical to the layered heart, forming a design through rhythmic, symmetrical lines made by consistently moving the milk pitcher. If you've already mastered the layered heart, then the leaf pattern will be just as achievable.

Introduction to the Leaf Latte Art Pattern

Today FrontStreet Coffee is sharing a new basic latte art pattern — the "Leaf"! This leaf pattern is almost identical in method to the Thousand Layer Heart, both creating patterns through evenly swinging the milk pitcher to form regular, symmetrical lines. If you've already mastered the Thousand Layer Heart, then the leaf pattern is practically in your bag too.

Differences Between Leaf and Thousand Layer Heart

What are the differences between making the Leaf and Thousand Layer Heart?

Of course, from the final result perspective, the Thousand Layer Heart and Leaf are completely different patterns, so we need to pay attention to the differences in the creation process of these two patterns.

The first difference is the injection point for the pattern formation. When making the Thousand Layer Heart latte art, the injection point is at the 1/4 position near the pitcher side, which allows the entire pattern to be fuller and centered. However, when making the Leaf latte art pattern, the injection point is at the center of the liquid surface. If you use the same injection point as the Thousand Layer Heart, the entire leaf pattern will appear shifted upward.

The second point is that making the Leaf involves a backward swinging motion, which is opposite to the Thousand Layer Heart's stationary or forward swinging motion. It is precisely this change in motion that distinguishes the Leaf from the Thousand Layer Heart as two completely different patterns.

Leaf Latte Art Steps

Like the Thousand Layer Heart, the Leaf belongs to the category of textured patterns, so both the milk foam and coffee crema need to be in a relatively thin state with good fluidity. For example, steaming milk from 5/10 full to 6/10 full foam would be just right.

First, fill the cup to 6/10 to 7/10 full with the fusion, then inject from the center point. Like making the Thousand Layer Heart, rhythmically swing the pitcher to create lines. At first, don't rush to move backward - keep swinging back and forth at the center point. The left hand holding the coffee cup should slowly tilt back, allowing the entire pattern to flow backward and form a wrapping effect.

Then the right hand holding the pitcher should slowly swing backward at an even speed while retreating. When moving backward, the pitcher spout can be raised slightly to avoid milk foam piling up in one clump. The height should be controlled between 0.5-1cm. If it's too high, it will wash away the white milk foam, creating a thin, unsightly stem.

When you're about to reach the edge of the cup, it's time to start the finishing motion. When finishing, don't rush to lift up and pull forward. The correct approach is to first lower the pitcher spout, pour more white milk foam, let the end form a small peach heart shape, then raise the pitcher spout and finish by pulling forward.

Common Mistakes

Below are some common mistakes specific to the Leaf pattern

The first mistake is not waiting for the texture to flow back and wrap around after the initial pattern formation, but instead moving directly backward. This makes the pattern appear top-heavy and unbalanced, which is not aesthetically pleasing.

The second mistake is that when swinging the pitcher while moving backward, the swing amplitude gradually decreases, causing the backward-moving pattern lines to not spread out properly, appearing very narrow and looking bottom-heavy, which is not aesthetically pleasing.
