The Reality of Opening a Coffee Shop

Recently, a colleague facing professional challenges left a message saying: "I've been under tremendous work pressure lately! Since I enjoy coffee, friends suggested I quit my job and open a coffee shop—at least life would be more comfortable. They say this year's coffee market is booming with unlimited opportunities... Can I succeed if I open a coffee shop now?"

Opportunities are indeed abundant in any era. However, without clear objectives and merely seeking to escape workplace pressures, opening a coffee shop anywhere won't make life more comfortable—quite the opposite, it will become increasingly difficult.

The Coffee Boom in China

I recall that Nikkei Chinese recently reported on the current state of China's booming coffee trend: a handful of successful entrepreneurs amid countless failures. The article noted that China's youth unemployment rate for ages 16-24 reached 19.3%, with many university graduates unable to find suitable jobs, leaving numerous young people frustrated.

With soaring real estate prices and widening income gaps, coffee shops—requiring relatively low startup capital—have become a shortcut for many to realize their dreams, as one can start with just a coffee machine. However, success isn't easy. Many shops struggle to differentiate themselves from large chain stores and fail to achieve profitability, becoming the biggest challenge in coffee shop management.

Does opening a coffee shop inevitably lead to losses? Of course not. The numerous failure cases result more from impulsive entries without consideration and planning for the future.

Challenges for Independent Coffee Shops

Many former coffee shop owners cite reasons such as recurring pandemic disruptions, the entry of chain coffee brands, impulsive openings, discovering the business wasn't profitable after opening and losing the motivation to persist, and excessive initial investment costs as reasons why independent coffee shops couldn't survive.

The ongoing pandemic has continuously changed consumer habits, with more people choosing takeout or delivery options and minimizing time spent in public spaces. This means fewer customers will choose to linger in coffee shops.

Many shop owners hope to offer exquisite products and comfortable spaces, impulsively investing heavily in prime locations and high-end equipment while focusing solely on in-store quality and not joining any delivery platforms. However, this approach doesn't suit the current environment.

Adapting Business Models

If choosing to open a shop now, consider locating it in a community not far from bustling areas. The shop doesn't need to be large, but it should meet the needs of a small segment of customers seeking space and specialty coffee while also attracting services that appeal to the general consumer base.

During the pandemic, coffee shops need to be smaller and more efficient, making the community shop + delivery model more suitable. Focusing on efficiency, product quality, and serving every walk-in customer well is paramount for a coffee shop's survival.

Competition from Chain Brands

Today, with an increasing number of chain coffee brands and entries from various industries, competition in the coffee sector has intensified. Most chains have mature operational management systems and marketing strategies, plus financing provides them with more substantial capital and higher risk resilience, driving coffee prices lower.

While low-priced coffee has encouraged more people to consume coffee, it has also changed public perception of coffee consumption. This poses challenges for independent coffee shops, as costs remain unchanged.

Despite the growing number of chain and cross-industry coffee shops, there's no shortage of consumers willing to patronize independent ones—they represent two different consumer groups. The former needs caffeine; the latter seeks environment, service, professionalism, and quality. For the same coffee beverage, consumers are willing to pay more at independent shops for the experiences that chain stores don't offer.

Specialty coffee pursues coffee bean quality, beverage excellence, and barista expertise, but few truly appreciate these aspects. General consumers don't recognize that the value of a cup of coffee includes the high cost of beans and the barista's skill. You might have a thousand explanations for why it's expensive, but none can convince the average consumer. Therefore, stable product quality and professional, meticulous service are most important.

Building Customer Loyalty

The most crucial aspect of running a shop is having repeat customers. Shop owners should observe each customer's preferences, visiting times, and other characteristics, keeping these small details in mind and making timely adjustments.

Customers will notice your changes, leading to increased satisfaction and eventually loyalty. The cost of acquiring a new customer is several times that of retaining an existing one! Cultivating regular customers is the most valuable business model.

Location Considerations

Is opening a shop in a small city less expensive? While rent might be cheaper compared to major cities, this is somewhat misleading... Shop rent is often determined by foot traffic. In small cities with high foot traffic, rent can be equally expensive—sometimes even more than in big cities... After all, high traffic doesn't guarantee business, as the number of people who actually need coffee may be less than imagined.

Final Considerations

Opening a shop is easy; maintaining it is difficult. While coffee entrepreneurship is challenging, it doesn't necessarily注定失败 from the start. That said, I don't encourage everyone, because of their ideals or momentary impulses, to think "why not open a coffee shop and live comfortably" when encountering setbacks in more promising career paths or earning some money.

Every job has its exhausting aspects. Even if you love what you do, the frustrating parts will still frustrate you. Therefore, before opening a coffee shop, you must consider everything carefully and make a decision you won't regret.
