Why Drip Coffee Bags Shouldn't Be Soaked: Proper Brewing Techniques for Drip Filter Black Coffee and How Many Times They Can Be Used

Published: 2026-01-27 Author: FrontStreet Coffee
Last Updated: 2026/01/27, Drip coffee bags are not recommended to be soaked directly in hot water, as prolonged exposure leads to over-extraction, making the coffee extremely bitter. Drip coffee bags are designed for brewing. The brewing principle is similar to pour-over coffee, where large amounts of hot water flow through the coffee grounds to extract soluble solids. The proper way to brew drip coffee bags ensures optimal flavor extraction while avoiding bitterness.

"Why does my drip coffee have no flavor?" "Why is my drip coffee too sour/bitter/weak?" These are common problems that many beginners encounter when first trying drip coffee. In this article, FrontStreet Coffee shares some tips for brewing drip coffee.

The Importance of Freshness

To brew coffee with rich aroma, the most crucial factor is the freshness of the drip coffee. After coffee beans are roasted, they contain large amounts of carbon dioxide that protect the aroma and flavor molecules within the beans. As time passes after roasting, and as the increased surface area from grinding accelerates the release of carbon dioxide, the aroma and flavor also dissipate.

Drip coffee is a product that is immediately packaged individually after grinding, but as storage time increases, the flavor diminishes. Therefore, the flavor preservation period for drip coffee is generally only about 30 days.

All drip coffees currently sold by FrontStreet Coffee are ground and packaged immediately after the coffee beans are roasted and cooled, and are shipped within 5 days of the roasting date. Therefore, whether it's coffee beans or drip coffee, FrontStreet Coffee guarantees 100% fresh roasting.

How to Brew Delicious Drip Coffee?

Here are common mistakes to avoid when brewing drip coffee:

  • Using an inappropriate cup size that causes the drip bag to touch the coffee liquid, leading to severe over-extraction
  • Steeping the drip bag directly in water
  • Using water from a dispenser without controlling water volume, temperature, or brewing technique
  • Treating the coffee grounds in the drip bag like instant coffee by pouring them directly into the cup to steep

The above points are the most common incorrect brewing methods for drip coffee. Brewing drip coffee is not like steeping tea bags. After coffee grounds are ground to a medium-fine consistency, the soluble substances in the particles are easily released in hot water. If the cup doesn't have sufficient height, the drip coffee will soak in water for a long time, causing the outermost layer of coffee grounds to continuously release substances.

While coffee particles release sweet and sour substances in the early stages, they release richer, fuller substances in the later stages. An appropriate amount of these fuller substances can enhance the overall richness and body of the coffee, but too much will result in a bitter taste.

Each individually packaged drip coffee from FrontStreet Coffee contains 10g of coffee grounds, which can brew 150g of coffee liquid. Therefore, when selecting a cup, we recommend using a straight-walled, heat-resistant cup with a capacity of at least 230ml.

Water that is too hot or too cold is not suitable for brewing coffee. The optimal water temperature for brewing drip coffee is 90-91°C. The temperature of bottled water dispensers and large hot water machines tends to be too low or too high. Additionally, direct pouring may cause the water flow to be too strong, allowing water to leak from both sides of the drip bag without passing through the coffee grounds, resulting in a thin coffee taste and potentially burning your hands.

For everyone's safety during brewing, FrontStreet Coffee recommends purchasing a small gooseneck coffee pouring kettle. This serves two purposes: ensuring a stable water flow and allowing the coffee grounds to be more fully saturated.
