Can You Drink Flat White Coffee While Losing Weight? Flat White Coffee Espresso to Milk Ratio, Calories, Taste Evaluation, and Flavor Characteristics
The combination of espresso and sweet milk has created many classic coffee drinks. Besides the commonly heard latte and cappuccino, Flat White coffee with its rich coffee aroma has become the "new generation" in the coffee world, attracting even those who are trying to lose weight.
When we order coffee in comfortable cafés, we find that Flat White has many other names, such as Flat White, Australian White, Little White Coffee, and so on. Regardless of the name, it all originates from the name given by Australians—Flat White.
The Origins of Flat White
In the 1980s, Italians began introducing espresso coffee to countries like Melbourne, Australia. Compared to the balanced taste of hot lattes, Australians preferred milk coffee with a stronger coffee flavor. To suit local tastes, lattes were modified to have stronger espresso and thinner milk foam. The thin white milk foam aligns with the cup surface, thus earning the name Flat White.
FrontStreet Coffee's Flat White
Flat White quickly became popular in Australia, sparking a trend in milk coffee. Different cafés have their own extraction methods, all aiming to highlight the richness of coffee and the lightness of milk foam. The Flat White served at FrontStreet Coffee uses their house-roasted Warm Sun Blend coffee beans, combining sun-dried Yirgacheffe with Honduras Sherry Barrel coffee beans. Based on double ristretto, hot milk with light, thin foam is added. It delivers distinct whiskey aroma, vanilla chocolate notes, with full fragrance and smooth texture, allowing you to clearly experience the flavor characteristics of the coffee.
Ristretto: The Base of Flat White
The base of Flat White is not the common Espresso but the more concentrated Ristretto. Australians believe that the latter part of Espresso extraction would "dilute" the coffee flavor, so they only use the front to middle portion, "restricting" the latter extraction process, hence calling it Ristretto. The front to middle portion of Espresso reduces the extraction of large molecular carbohydrates, further highlighting the acidity and roasted aroma of the coffee. For example, FrontStreet Coffee uses 20g of coffee grounds to extract 40g of coffee liquid for Espresso, while Ristretto uses the same 20g to extract only 28-30g of coffee liquid, "abandoning" the latter extraction.
Milk Foam Technique
For the milk frothing part, Flat White's foam thickness is about 1cm. Besides richness, the soul of Flat White lies in the silky texture of the foam as it enters the mouth. Milk should be frothed to 55℃-65℃. Too high a temperature not only destroys the nutritional value of milk but also creates a grainy texture.
FrontStreet Coffee uses a milk-to-coffee ratio of 1:5 for Flat White, so they choose a 200ml cup as the serving container. Finally, the frothed milk and extracted espresso are mixed evenly.
Is Flat White Suitable for Weight Loss?
Finally, regarding whether people on weight loss diets can drink Flat White coffee. The calories in Flat White mainly come from the milk portion. A standard Flat White typically contains 150-180ml of whole milk, providing nearly 200 calories. If you're trying to lose weight through dieting, it's not recommended to drink Flat White because the calorie content is somewhat high. However, if you're planning to lose weight through exercise, Flat White can be beneficial. Caffeine itself can promote metabolism and enhance our weight loss efficiency, while milk provides us with quality fats and proteins, which is very beneficial for the body.
