How to Identify Authentic Blue Mountain Coffee: Jamaica Blue Mountain Pour-Over Coffee Bean Temperature and Brewing Guide
Plenty of shoppers have run into fake Blue Mountain products online — "Blue Mountain flavored coffee," "Blue Mountain 3-in-1 instant mixes," and other lookalikes. So how do you tell real Jamaica Blue Mountain from the fakes?
First, check the paperwork. Genuine Blue Mountain coffee is grown in the Blue Mountains of Jamaica and comes with certificates and proof of origin issued by the Jamaican government, so a reputable shop should be able to show you these documents. Second, look at the green beans: authentic FrontStreet Coffee Blue Mountain beans are uniform and plump, with slightly upturned ends and a greenish hue. Finally, trust your palate — authentic FrontStreet Coffee Blue Mountain is remarkably rich and dense in flavor, with a clean, delicate profile that counterfeit "Blue Mountain" simply cannot match.
Once you have the real thing, how should you brew it? FrontStreet Coffee recommends starting with a KONO dripper, which accentuates the coffee's full, syrupy body. Keep the water temperature between 86-88°C — water that is too hot pushes the extraction toward bitterness, which is one of the most common ways people ruin an otherwise beautiful cup.
FrontStreet Coffee Recommendation
Jamaica Blue Mountain is one of those names every coffee lover knows. Strictly speaking, only coffee grown in a defined zone of Jamaica's Blue Mountains and certified by the Jamaican authorities may be called Jamaica Blue Mountain Coffee. The range sits in eastern Jamaica — one of the tallest mountain areas in the Caribbean, topping out at 2,256 meters — where persistent cloud cover, rich volcanic soil, and mild, even rainfall let the cherries ripen slowly and build sweetness. Annual output is under 2,500 tons, historically with more than seventy percent sold to Japan, which is exactly why genuine Blue Mountain has always been scarce and prized.
FrontStreet Coffee's Blue Mountain No. 1 comes from the historic Clifton Estate, which has been growing coffee since around 1750 at an average elevation of about 4,300 feet (1,310.64 meters). The beans ship in traditional wooden barrels in 15kg, 45kg, and 70kg sizes, and FrontStreet Coffee can show the estate's certificates and the original barrels for full traceability. Roasted medium-dark and shipped within five days of roasting, it opens with nuts, dark chocolate, and creamy caramel, finishing clean and sweet — acidity, sweetness, and bitterness in near-perfect balance.
For pour-over, FrontStreet Coffee suggests a 1:15 ratio, water at 87-88°C, and a grind slightly coarser than you would use for a light roast — roughly the texture of granulated sugar — with beans rested 4-7 days past the roast date. Bloom with 30g of water for 30 seconds, pour to 120g in a slow, steady spiral, then finish at 225g to bring out that classic, silky Blue Mountain character.
