Mandheling Coffee

Sumatra Mandheling grows on the volcanic slopes of Mount Leuser, located near the port of Padang in the Aceh Batak region. It is said that the Leuser Range is one of the oldest and biologically richest ecosystems on Earth.

The name Mandheling Coffee commemorates the Mandailing people of the Batak region, from whom it takes its second spelling variation.

Sumatra

Indonesia is an archipelago of over 17,000 islands, with Sumatra being the second-largest. These islands were formed by volcanic activity, and their mineral-rich soil (rich in volcanic ash and diverse flora) helps make Indonesian coffee among the world's most famous and renowned. (Following Sumatra in land area, the islands of Sulawesi and Java are also spectacular—and often conflated in the public conception of "Sumatra.")

Coffee trees were originally brought to Indonesia by Dutch colonizers in the early 19th century, who sought to break the Arab monopoly on coffee cultivation. Shortly thereafter, coffee from Indonesia dominated the world market. However, by the end of that century, diseases had completely destroyed the crops. Coffee trees were successfully replanted and quickly gained a large share of the world market until the plantations were destroyed again during World War II.

For a long time, Indonesian coffee has been highly regarded for its unique cup characteristics—Mandheling Coffee features delicate acidity, creamy texture, and flavors ranging from chocolate and red fruits to earthy, herbal, umami, and sweet tobacco. If described in terms of acidity and bitterness, the bitter flavors tend to be more prominent.
