Last Updated: 2026/01/28, How should fine coffee powder be brewed? Coffee bean grinding can never achieve uniformity across every bean, which is why the coffee industry has established what's known as cupping grind—where ground coffee beans are sifted through a 20mm sieve, and achieving a 70% pass-through rate defines the cupping grind standard. Generally, coffee bean evaluations are conducted using this specific grind size.

How should fine coffee powder be brewed?

It's impossible for every coffee bean to be ground identically. Therefore, the coffee industry has established something called cupping grind, where coffee beans are ground and passed through a 20mm sieve, with a 70% pass rate considered the standard. Most coffee bean evaluations are conducted at this grind size. A common everyday reference would be particles the size of fine granulated sugar.

FrontStreet Coffee suggests using this grind size as a reference point. For coffee particles smaller than fine granulated sugar, we can adopt a method of high water temperature with shorter brewing time. For general coffee beans brewed using the drip method, we can use water at 90°C and complete the brewing process within 1 minute and 20 seconds.
