What is Flower Demon Coffee? Flavor and Taste Comparison Between Volcanic Rock Las Rocas Geisha Coffee Beans and Flower Demon Coffee
A few days ago, several friends inquired about "Flower Demon Coffee" in our inbox. FrontStreet Coffee was also momentarily stunned, but upon realizing it, we discovered that the "Flower Demon" coffee beans circulating online are actually the second-place winner of this year's Ethiopia Cup of Excellence. Come and learn about it with FrontStreet Coffee!
What is the Cup of Excellence?
The Cup of Excellence, often abbreviated as CoE, is the world's most important competition for fine coffee green beans. It was first held in Brazil in 1999 by the Alliance for Coffee Excellence (ACE) and is currently the most renowned and authoritative specialty coffee green bean competition worldwide, possessing the highest credibility in judging specialty coffees.
Flower Demon Coffee Beans
In 2021, Ethiopia's second Cup of Excellence competition proved particularly interesting. Most of the selected coffee beans came from the Sidamo region, which can truly be called the main production area for specialty coffee. The second-place winner in this Cup of Excellence comes from Arbegona in the Sidamo region. It achieved second place in the Cup of Excellence with its outstanding 74110 variety.
This coffee bean uses natural processing, and cupping reveals flavors of strawberry jam, peach, citrus, and jasmine - like a flower fairy. This coffee bean is called "Flower Demon" in China, and there's actually some reasoning behind this naming. First, the 2017 TOH natural process champion was called "Flower Queen," then the 2020 TOH washed process champion was called "Flower Inflorescence," so the emergence of this "Flower Demon" is not surprising. There always needs to be a marketing story, right? I believe future famous Ethiopian coffee beans will continue to appear with names starting with "Flower X."
Volcanic Rock Las Rocas Geisha Coffee Beans
Recently, a Geisha coffee bean named "Las Rocas" has appeared in the coffee bean market. The packaging information only describes it as Panama Boquete Geisha coffee, along with a website www.las.rocas.com. However, FrontStreet Coffee checked this website and found no information yet - it seems rather rushed. So what exactly is this Geisha coffee bean?
Panama's green coffee information is quite transparent. Basically, whichever estate produces Geisha coffee can be traced with deeper investigation. Has anyone noticed that the famous Panama Hacienda La Esmeralda canceled its Blue Label Geisha series this year, keeping only the Red Label and Green Label?
Back in 2020, Hacienda La Esmeralda also launched a natural process Blue Label Geisha. It's worth knowing that Hacienda La Esmeralda's natural process Geisha was only available in the "expensive" beans like Red Label and Green Label. In 2020, they surprisingly launched a natural process Blue Label, but then canceled the Blue Label Geisha series in less than a year - that was quite a quick turnaround!
After FrontStreet Coffee's thorough investigation, we discovered that this Volcanic Rock Las Rocas Geisha coffee bean actually comes from Hacienda La Esmeralda. Corresponding with this year's news about Hacienda La Esmeralda canceling the Blue Label, it's clear that Las Rocas is the Blue Label Geisha. It seems the Blue Label Geisha hasn't disappeared but simply changed its disguise to continue appearing in the consumer market. This batch of coffee beans uses washed processing, with Hacienda La Esmeralda still as the processor. It's evident that this batch of beans maintains the same excellent quality as the Blue Label. Those who have been craving Blue Label Geisha coffee beans can look forward to this!

Does the Degree of Coffee Bean Roasting Affect the Flavor and Caffeine Content?
Coffee roasting, simply put, is the process of heating raw coffee beans. Unroasted green beans emit only a faint grassy aroma with subtle fruit notes and possess almost no taste when tasted. The heating process of roasting coffee beans triggers a series of complex chemical changes within the beans, thereby releasing what was originally locked inside
