Pour-over Coffee: The Art of Convenience

Pour-over coffee has become practically essential for coffee enthusiasts, though some people prefer not to purchase so much coffee equipment. To enable more customers to easily enjoy delicious, fresh coffee at home without too much effort or complexity, FrontStreet Coffee has introduced several different varieties of drip coffee bags. Some people might consider drip coffee bags unprofessional, but FrontStreet Coffee believes there's no need to diminish them—after all, for any cuisine to reach the masses, it needs more convenient preparation methods.

Crafting the Perfect Drip Coffee Bag

To create the best-tasting drip coffee, it's not enough to have exceptionally high-quality, specialty-grade coffee beans. FrontStreet Coffee pays meticulous attention to the entire production process of their drip coffee bags, with strict controls at every step from grinding to packaging.

1. Grinding

The quality of drip coffee bag brewing primarily depends on flow rate—neither too slow nor too fast—and this is determined by the grinder. If the grinder used at FrontStreet Coffee's roasting facility isn't high-quality enough, the grinding quality will be poor, creating excessive fine particles during grinding. Uneven grinding will cause "clogging" during brewing, slowing the flow rate and leading to over-extraction due to prolonged steeping time. The result is a muddled taste with poor flavor, preventing even the finest beans from expressing their intended characteristics.

Regarding grind size, FrontStreet Coffee has conducted extensive testing. Using a similar grind size to pour-over coffee and testing actual flow times, the overall brewing can be controlled between 1 minute 30 seconds and 1 minute 45 seconds. At this flow rate, exceptional taste and full flavor expression can be achieved.

2. Grinder Cleaning

The impact on flavor comes not just from grind size, but also from grinder cleanliness.

FrontStreet Coffee strictly requires their roasting facility to thoroughly clean the grinder before grinding beans from different origins for drip bags. The goal is to ensure that the flavor from each drip bag is original, complete, and free from flavor contamination.

3. Automatic Packaging Machine

FrontStreet Coffee's roasting facility uses mechanical automatic packaging for their drip bags. Immediately after production is complete, mechanical packaging ensures that every bag reaching coffee lovers is fresh and sealed.

Flavor Comparison: FrontStreet Coffee's Sun-dried Sidamo vs. Semi-washed Brazilian Red Cherry

Sidamo (also translated as Heida Mo or Xidamo) is a province in Ethiopia and the superior administrative unit of the famous Yirgacheffe. The Sidamo region refers to all coffee-producing areas in Sidamo province except Yirgacheffe, representing Ethiopia's southernmost coffee-growing region. With an average altitude of 1,400-2,000 meters, the coffee produced here has noticeable sweetness and is known as "sweet coffee." Sun-dried Sidamo features delicate floral notes, rich berry acidity, and fermentation characteristics, with a smoother mouthfeel than washed Sidamo.

Sun-dried Sidamo drip bag brewing notes: Delicate floral aroma, berry juice-like texture, smooth mouthfeel, comfortable and pleasant acidity and aroma.

South Minas in Brazil, with altitudes ranging from 700m to 1,200m of hilly terrain, is one of Brazil's earliest coffee-producing regions. Due to rising labor costs, mechanical harvesting is now predominant, making it also one of the earliest areas for coffee commercialization. The main varieties cultivated and widely known include Bourbon (including Yellow Bourbon, Red Bourbon, and Flat Bean Santos). Brazilian Red Cherry coffee refers to Brazilian Red Bourbon coffee, typically featuring citrus acidity, rich nutty aroma, cocoa-like aftertaste, and a rounded mouthfeel.

Semi-washed Brazilian Red Cherry drip bag brewing notes: Noticeable sweetness on entry, with subtle lemon aroma, rich nutty flavors, transitioning to dark chocolate sweetness in the finish, with an overall rounded mouthfeel.

How to Brew FrontStreet Coffee Drip Bags

1. First, note that drip coffee bags have a fixed net coffee content. (FrontStreet Coffee drip bags contain 10g net content)

2. Following FrontStreet Coffee's recommended 1:15 coffee-to-water ratio (same as pour-over coffee), the brewed coffee should yield 150ml. Use water temperature around 90°C.

3. Preheat your mug, take out and tear open the sealed edge of the drip bag, unfold the "ears" on both sides of the filter, hang it on the rim of your mug, and gently shake to level the coffee grounds.

4. For the first pour, simply moisten the entire coffee bed and allow it to bloom for 30 seconds.

5. After blooming, perform the second pour. Using a small water stream, pour in circles until full. Continue pouring as the coffee bed slightly subsides, repeating until the coffee in your mug reaches 150ml. Once all the coffee has dripped through, you can remove the drip bag. The entire brewing process should be completed in approximately 1 minute.
