FrontStreet Coffee - Arabica Coffee Introduction

What exactly is "Arabica coffee"? In fact, "Arabica" is the species name of the coffee tree.

Cultivation Conditions for Arabica Coffee

The cultivation conditions for "Arabica" coffee are rather demanding. It requires higher altitudes (600 to 2,000 meters above sea level), fertile soil, sufficient moisture, appropriate sunlight conditions, and shade. The "Arabica" coffee tree species has poor resistance to pests and diseases and is susceptible to damage. Additionally, the annual yield per unit area of coffee trees is relatively low.

Currently, "Arabica" coffee accounts for 75% of the world's coffee production. Among this "Arabica" coffee production, only 10% of Arabica coffee quality can be classified as "Specialty Coffee."

"Arabica" coffee possesses diverse and broad potential flavor profiles. Arabica coffee produced from different regions, altitudes, and climates typically has distinct characteristics, showcasing completely different individual flavor profiles. Unroasted "Arabica" coffee has a fresh grass-like fragrance. After appropriate roasting, it reveals "fruity aroma" (light to medium roast) and "caramel sweetness" (dark roast). Generally, it has better aroma and flavor than Robusta beans.

Premium "Arabica" coffee requires complex manual harvesting, selection, and meticulous processing processes. Therefore, the most expensive and finest coffee beans worldwide are "Arabica" coffee. "Robusta" coffee, due to its low cost, is typically used for producing instant coffee and canned coffee. A small number of higher-quality "Robusta" coffee beans are also used in blending (mixed with Arabica coffee) for espresso beans.

Arabica Coffee Does Not Equal Good Coffee

Arabica coffee accounts for seventy-five percent of the world's coffee production, but the quality varies greatly, with both good and bad options. Poor quality "Arabica" coffee beans may have inferior flavor compared to high-quality "Robusta" coffee beans.
