FrontStreet Coffee - Introduction to Mandheling Coffee

Unlike typical coffee beans, Mandheling coffee beans are usually larger in size and harder in texture. During cultivation, any errors can easily lead to defects. After harvesting, they typically undergo strict manual selection. If the quality control process is not rigorous enough, it can easily result in inconsistent quality. Additionally, different roasting levels directly affect the taste, making it one of the more controversial single-origin coffees. Mandheling has a rich flavor with intense body and a vibrant, lively character. It is neither astringent nor acidic, allowing its body and bitterness to be fully expressed. Mandheling is actually a derived variety of Typica.

The appearance of Mandheling coffee beans can be said to be ugly among coffee beans, but coffee enthusiasts say that the uglier Sumatran coffee beans look, the better, richer, and smoother their taste often is. Besides, this coffee has a faint earthy aroma, which some describe as the fragrance of herbal plants. How roasters roast and how baristas brew all affect the flavor of a cup of coffee. Due to the characteristics of Mandheling coffee beans, most of what we drink today is predominantly dark roasted! Therefore, it carries some bitterness and slight acidity.

Origin of the Name

Actually, Mandheling is not a region name, place name, port name, nor a coffee variety name. Its name is actually a transliteration error of the Indonesian Mandheling ethnic group. During World War II when Japan occupied Indonesia, a Japanese soldier drank exceptionally fragrant and mellow coffee at a café. He asked the owner the name of the coffee, but the owner mistakenly thought he was asking where he was from, so he replied: Mandheling. After the war, the soldier recalled the "Mandheling" he drank in Indonesia. He then entrusted an Indonesian coffee merchant to ship 15 tons to Japan, which surprisingly became extremely popular.

The name Mandheling spread in this way, and that coffee merchant is now the renowned Pwani Coffee Company (PWN). As is well known, Mandheling is produced around Lake Toba in northern Sumatra. The finished product has a unique fresh aroma of medicinal herbs and forest trees. There are really many names for Mandheling on the market: Golden Mandheling, Supreme Golden Mandheling, Tiger Mandheling, Horse-face Mandheling, and Emerald Mandheling. These names are mainly used to distinguish Mandheling from different regions based on different areas and green bean suppliers.

Sumatran Mandheling is a premium coffee bean grown on highland plateaus at elevations of 750-1500 meters. The most famous origins for Asian coffee are the various islands of the Malay Archipelago: Sumatra, Java, and Kalimantan. Among these, Sumatran Mandheling coffee produced on Sumatra Island, Indonesia, enjoys the highest reputation. It has two famous varieties: Sumatran Mandheling DP Grade One and Classic Sumatran Mandheling. Sumatran Mandheling DP Grade One has a long aftertaste with a wild fragrance - the unique earthy aroma characteristic of primeval forests.

Actually, the richness of Mandheling presents a very masculine feeling. High-quality Grade One Mandheling coffee has very light acidity, just like the slight tartness of flowers and fruits. Besides the characteristic richness of Indonesian coffee, it also has a sweet-in-bitter taste. Before Blue Mountain coffee was discovered, Mandheling was once regarded as the finest among coffees.
