Brazil was indeed dominated by commodity-grade coffee beans in the past. In recent years, the third wave of specialty coffee in Brazil has grown stronger. More and more consumers have demand for specialty coffee, which in turn has promoted more Brazilian estates to grow specialty coffee and conduct more refined post-processing, as well as encouraging more coffee scientists to develop new varieties and fermentation methods.
The second reason is insufficient self-promotion. Because the Brazilian Specialty Coffee Association does not have much funding, unlike neighboring Colombia, where every bag of exported green beans is subject to a coffee tax for the association's promotional expenses. Brazil once had such a policy, but it was abolished in 1991.
However, Brazil actually has the potential to become a major producer of specialty coffee because Brazil is a coffee-growing country with a long history. Brazil has the world's largest plateau area. Nowadays, many young people specifically study agriculture or bachelor's and doctoral degrees related to coffee in order to better manage and inherit their family estates.
Catuai comes from the Agronomic Institute of Campinas (IAC) in São Paulo, Brazil. It is a hybrid result of Mundo Novo and Caturra varieties. Because the plants are small, they can be planted closely together in large-scale cultivation. The planting density is almost twice that of Bourbon coffee, which makes its yield much higher than Bourbon varieties. In addition, although its resistance to pests and diseases is not strong, the advantage of plant shape makes it relatively easy to handle pests and diseases manually.
Catuai means "very good" in Portuguese. Today, people consider Catuai variety coffee to have good (not stunning) cup quality. It comes in two types: yellow cherry berries and red cherry berries. It was initially hybridized from yellow Caturra and Mundo Novo in 1949 and was originally called H-2077.
This variety was officially released in Brazil in 1972 after pedigree selection (selecting individual plants through successive generations) and has been widely planted there. Today in Brazil, there are multiple Catuai breeding production lineages to choose from; some lineages have very high planting and production efficiency. However, Catuai transferred from Brazil to Central American growing regions seems to be less productive; for example, studies have found that Catuai planted in Honduras and Costa Rica does not have significant yield advantages compared to Caturra.
