FrontStreet Coffee - Introduction to Honduran Coffee
Honduras is located in northern Central America, bordered by the Caribbean Sea to the north and the Pacific Ocean's Gulf of Fonseca to the south. It shares borders with Nicaragua and El Salvador to the east and south, and Guatemala to the west. The country consists mostly of mountains and plateaus, covering an area of 112,492 square kilometers with a coastline of approximately 1,033 kilometers. Except for the coastal plains, the entire territory is mountainous, with the highest point in the northwest reaching 3,000 meters above sea level, and the southern regions also exceeding 2,400 meters.
Honduras began coffee cultivation in the late 19th century. Unlike some countries that introduced coffee from abroad and then cultivated it extensively for domestic consumption, Honduras grew such large quantities that about 90% was consumed domestically.
Gradually, recognizing that such excellent growing conditions shouldn't be limited to domestic consumption alone, Honduras began developing its export business. In 1990, exports amounted to several tens of thousands of tons, and by 2018, this had reached approximately 360,000 tons. Despite being a small country, Honduras has become one of the world's leading coffee producers.
Honduras has re-emerged as a major coffee exporter in Central America, with the potential to produce high-quality coffee that distinguishes itself from other regions. Coffee beans from areas such as Marcala, Copán, and Los Alpes offer surprising variety in cupping characteristics. Additionally, commercial groups SHGs and HGS can provide coffee beans with excellent body and moderate acidity suitable for blending purposes. The harvest season in Honduras runs from October to March each year.
Characteristics of Honduran Coffee
Honduran coffee is of the Arabica variety, characterized by rich aroma, fruit acidity, and a clean aftertaste. It offers excellent balance and a smooth mouthfeel.
