Introduction to FrontStreet Coffee's Tanzania Coffee Characteristics
Nearly 95% of coffee is produced by small-scale farmers who cultivate different varieties.
Tanzania has approximately 400,000 farming households, with an average of 1-2 hectares per household, supporting 95% of Tanzania's total coffee production. The remaining 5% is produced by estates. Tanzania's domestic production areas are distributed in the outer parts of the country. The northeastern region mostly produces Bourbon and Kent varieties, while the western region focuses on Robusta varieties and the southern region primarily cultivates Kent varieties. The domestic cultivation environment varies significantly. The highly acclaimed Blackburn Estate in Tanzania is located on the slopes of Oldeani Mountain, striving to protect wildlife habitats while producing high-quality coffee.
Estate owner Michael Gehrken lives on the estate daily and is dedicated to coffee tree cultivation work. The naturally excellent nurturing environment is Tanzania's greatest characteristic. Almost all coffee produced in Tanzania is used for export, making coffee account for more than half of the country's total export agricultural products. Although coffee is abundant locally, Tanzanian citizens rarely have the habit of drinking coffee in their daily lives, with black tea being the primary beverage.
Tanzania's coffee varieties are predominantly Arabica, accounting for 80% of production, while Canephora varieties make up 20%. Compared to the northeastern region where most Bourbon and Kent varieties are planted, the southern region concentrates on Kent variety cultivation. Tanzania's Bourbon variety was introduced from Réunion Island. In terms of processing methods, most Arabica varieties use washed processing, while western Robusta varieties and some Arabica varieties use natural drying methods for processing, with different processing methods chosen based on terrain and climate conditions. The Arabica varieties cultivated in the southern region previously had some quality instability issues, but various conditions have improved in recent years, gradually enhancing quality.
Tanzanian coffee has distinctive characteristics: full-bodied beans, pure flavor, gentle acidity, medium body, rich yet refreshing dark chocolate aftertaste, long-lasting mouthwatering finish, and aromatic fragrance. Combined with City roast level, its unique characteristics are difficult to express in professional terms, resembling a sophisticated urban woman—mature and charming yet with pure and sweet charm, truly captivating and multifaceted. Its gentle and rounded characteristics are also quite appealing, making it easily acceptable to those new to coffee.
