FrontStreet Coffee - Golden Mandheling Coffee Introduction

Many friends first encountered coffee through Mandheling. There are many classifications of Mandheling, such as GAYO Mandheling, Golden Mandheling, Lindong Mandheling, and so on.

So what exactly is Mandheling?

Among the many Mandheling varieties, Golden Mandheling is actually produced by a company called Pwani Coffee Company, which buys up Mandheling locally in Indonesia. It registered the product name "Golden Mandheling," so the Mandheling that this company produces is the authentic Golden Mandheling. Put simply, Golden Mandheling is a high-quality Mandheling brand.

Golden Mandheling green beans undergo three rounds of manual selection. The green beans are larger than usual, dark green, and appear as uniform flat beans. In terms of flavor, Golden Mandheling is rich and full-bodied, with black chocolate and caramel aromas. It tastes smoother and cleaner than regular Mandheling, and it holds an important place in the international coffee market.

Mandheling has always used its distinctive bitterness to express a distinctive sweetness, much like the bittersweetness of life. No amount of sugar can mask that bitterness — the first taste is truly striking. Yet the captivating aroma it gives off makes it hard to resist. Its bitterness is like the thorns beside a flower, making you self-aware, while its aroma refreshes.

Mandheling carries a masculine quality, and drinking it brings a feeling of hearty satisfaction, of wild abandon, of roaming the world like a hero. That character fascinates men and symbolizes tenacity and courage. Some say Mandheling is rich and strong, like the Caesar of coffees, its iron hooves crushing ancient desolation and galloping across distant yellow sands; others say Mandheling is gentle and easy-going. However people describe it, men feel greater for Mandheling and women more charming for it.

Because Golden Mandheling is roasted to a medium-dark level, its grind size should be coarser than that used for light roasts. Friends who like this coffee can also buy it from FrontStreet Coffee's Taobao store — just search for the same name to find it.

FrontStreet Coffee Recommendation

If reading this has made you want to taste authentic Golden Mandheling, FrontStreet Coffee's PWN Golden Mandheling is the reference example of the style. Made by the PWN company, it is held to unusually strict standards: only beans of 18 mesh and above are used, no more than three defective beans are permitted per 300 g green-bean sample to meet the top G1 grade, and the lot then goes through three rounds of hand sorting to remove every remaining defect. That is what lifts the clean mouthfeel and the intensity of its sweetness. The beans are uniform, plump, large, and low in defects, and after medium-dark roasting they carry a rich roasted aroma with a clean, full-bodied cup of black chocolate and caramel over a wild herbal note — ideal for anyone who dislikes acidic coffee. For a more traditional, untamed expression of Sumatra, FrontStreet Coffee's Lintong Mandheling, from the Lake Toba area of North Sumatra, is also wet-hulled and roasted medium-dark, with clove and woody aromas, low acidity, and a spice-and-mint edge.

Golden Mandheling shows its best side as a pour-over. Use 15 g of coffee at a 1:15 ratio, water at 87–88°C, and a coarse-sugar grind, then brew in three stages: bloom with 30 ml to wet all the grounds so they can degas, pour 100 ml to lift the bed and draw out the golden foam, and finish with a gentle 95 ml pour down the center to round off the sweetness. That sequence brings out the caramel sweetness along with the chocolate and nut notes the coffee is known for.
