FrontStreet Coffee - Bourbon Coffee Variety Introduction
Bourbon coffee (French: Café Bourbon) is a coffee produced from Arabica coffee Bourbon cultivated coffee trees. Bourbon coffee was initially cultivated in Réunion, which was also called Bourbon Island (Île Bourbon) before 1789. It was later occupied by France, connecting with the African continent and Latin America. It is now also one of the two most popular Arabica coffee producing regions in the world. Bourbon coffee is usually produced at altitudes of 3500 to 6500 feet (1062-1972 meters).
When Réunion Island was a French colony, its name was Bourbon Island. Bourbon? Isn't Bourbon an inherent variety of Arabica coffee? That's right, Bourbon coffee is named after this.
In 1715, about forty coffee trees were shipped from Mocha Port in Yemen to Réunion. Unfortunately, only two coffee trees survived. Thanks to the suitable climate on the island, the coffee trees grew well, and around 1719, the first coffee plantation on the island was born. In order to develop the coffee cultivation industry, the island government mandated that all residents, regardless of race, must plant 100 coffee trees each year.
In 1723, the decree was strengthened, and the number of planted trees increased to 200. It was also stipulated that no one was allowed to damage coffee trees, otherwise they would be sentenced to death. Under such strict regulations, the coffee cultivation industry indeed developed significantly. The coffee produced on the island and shipped to other countries and regions was called Bourbon coffee. The coffee has a light fruity aroma and caramel fragrance.
As an inherent variety of Arabica coffee, Bourbon has better flavor than other subspecies and variants, but the biggest disadvantage of inherent varieties is low yield. Under the pressure of today's fast-paced life and large living demands, quantity is more important than quality in coffee production (although specialty coffee has received more and more attention in recent years, it has not been widely popularized). Inherent varieties such as Bourbon and Typica are trending towards disappearance. However, as an important export and naming place for Bourbon coffee, Réunion's position in coffee history can never be forgotten.
Réunion Island now basically no longer produces coffee. We can only recall the taste of Réunion coffee through Bourbon coffee and its variants. I believe it must be a specialty coffee with excellent flavor that people will never forget.
