FrontStreet Coffee - Introduction to Indian Coffee

In 1600 AD, Saint Baba Baduli planted several sproutable coffee seeds in his home courtyard in Karnataka, planting the "Mocha Seven Stars." Initially, no one paid attention to these "extraterrestrial visitors" in the garden. For quite a long time, the coffee seedlings began to grow and spread on their own. By the 18th century, due to British colonial rule and coffee demand, British entrepreneurs entered India to seek their fortune. The entrepreneurs successfully conquered the forest areas of southern India. Since then, India's commercial coffee cultivation began to expand and developed rapidly.

Coffee Characteristics: Indian coffee generally has a mild taste with low but excellent acidity, possessing rich exotic flavors and intense aromas, full of spice notes and a lasting aftertaste. It is praised as one of the world's best "light" coffees. The climate conditions in India's coffee-growing regions are diverse, suitable for cultivating different types of coffee. Some high-altitude areas are most suitable for growing Arabica varieties, while those with warm and humid conditions are ideal for Robusta varieties. India grows all its coffee under a well-defined two-tier mixed shade canopy composed of evergreen leguminous plants.

There are nearly 50 different types of shade trees in coffee plantations. Shade trees prevent soil erosion on sloped land; they enrich the soil by recycling nutrients from deeper layers, protect coffee trees from seasonal temperature fluctuations, and support various flora and fauna. India's coffee plantations are also an essential part of the spice world: various spices and fruit crops such as pepper, cardamom, vanilla, oranges, and bananas are intercropped and grow alongside the coffee trees.

India is the only country that grows coffee using full-area shade cultivation. It has been producing and exporting various high-quality coffees for over 150 years, consistently maintaining high quality in its exports.

India's monsoon coffees are most famous for "Monsoon Malabar" and "Monsoon Basanically," with the latter having larger export volumes. Other countries attempt to achieve similar flavors to monsoon coffee through fermentation processes during green bean treatment, but none utilize monsoons for green coffee processing like India does. Monsoon coffee can be said to be a major highlight of Indian coffee.

Although India is famous for black tea production, having unique offerings like monsoon coffee suggests great potential for India's coffee development. After all, before the rust disease that devastated Indian coffee production, India's coffee industry was quite prosperous. Perhaps one day India's coffee industry can regain its former glory, and we look forward to more specialty coffees being offered to the world, and for the wave of specialty coffee to become even more popular.
