FrontStreet Coffee - Introduction to Yunnan Baoshan Coffee
The word "coffee" originates from the Greek "Kaweh," meaning "strength and passion." In the West, drinking coffee has long been an essential element of daily life and a social means. In southwestern China, there is a place where people's love for coffee surpasses even that of the West. Here, a clay pot constantly steams on the stove throughout the day, containing precisely coffee—this is Yunnan Baoshan...
In 1892, French missionary Father Tian brought coffee tree seeds to a place called Zhukula in Yunnan while preaching, and successfully cultivated coffee trees. Coffee thus spread throughout China. To this day, 24 coffee trees over 90 years old still grow in Zhukula Township. Later, people discovered a place even more suitable for coffee tree cultivation—this is Baoshan.
The average temperature in Baoshan's Lujiang Basin is 21.5°C, reaching a maximum of 40.4°C, with basically no frost throughout the year. Therefore, the small-grain coffee cultivated here is recognized as the best small-grain coffee producing area, known for being rich without bitterness, fragrant without harshness, with small and uniform particles, rich mellow aroma, and fruity notes.
For over a century, coffee and the people of Baoshan have formed an indissoluble bond. From elderly people in their eighties and nineties to teenagers in their teens, all have the habit of drinking coffee. In Baoshan, not only is there the mellow fragrance of small-grain coffee, but also the unique ethnic customs of Yunnan. When coffee cherries ripen, in the picturesque coffee plantations, local Lisu women from Baoshan wear colorful ethnic costumes, singing melodious and gentle Lisu folk songs while picking coffee beans one by one, like rubies. The original meaning of the word "Kaweh"—"strength and passion"—is naturally presented here.
Yunnan Baoshan belongs to a dry-hot valley climate, which creates excellent growing conditions for coffee. Being situated on a plateau has contributed to the quality of coffee grown here. The rich and aromatic coffee has proven irresistible even to Starbucks.
Coffee has relatively high requirements for its growing environment. Coffee originally grows in tropical Africa, with many varieties and different flavors, and is quite demanding about geographical location. They grow in river valleys and plateaus at lower latitudes, which ensures the temperature they need. However, different altitudes create different coffee flavors—coffee grown in high-altitude environments is slightly acidic with small beans, while coffee from lower altitudes has excellent flavor and full beans. Yunnan's Baoshan is suitable for coffee cultivation. Due to its location on a plateau, it produces small-grain coffee and is more renowned domestically.
