FrontStreet Coffee - Introduction to Guatemala Atitlan Coffee
Guatemala, whose name originates from the Mayan language, means "Land of Forests."
In the 1850s, missionaries brought coffee to Guatemala. After the 19th century, coffee gradually became an important export product for Guatemala. After 1944, Guatemala fell into a half-century-long civil war, which damaged the existing coffee industry, but Guatemala's original native coffee variety—Bourbon—was preserved!
Reasons Why It's Suitable for Coffee Cultivation
Located in Central America, Guatemala currently ranks eighth in the world in coffee production. Although Guatemala's land area is not large, why is its coffee production so high, including excellent quality coffee?
Despite its limited land area, Guatemala boasts a rich and diverse climate. Known for its lakes and volcanoes, Guatemala's volcanic soil, abundant rainfall, variable temperatures and humidity, and high altitude combine to provide excellent growing conditions for coffee.
Lake Atitlan is known as "the most beautiful lake." This area was once a group of volcanoes, and volcanic eruptions caused the ground to sink, forming the lake over time. While corn and black beans are primarily grown here, the most important product is coffee!
The main regions for high-quality Guatemalan coffee are the Lake Atitlan region and the Huehuetenango region. The Antigua region is also an important coffee-producing area, where the coffee produced earns praise from countless coffee enthusiasts. The beautiful Lake Atitlan nurtures premium coffee, as if the coffee has absorbed the scenic beauty of Lake Atitlan—just hearing this name brings comfort and beauty to mind.
Guatemalan coffee has a rich aroma. Compared to the fruity notes of African coffees, Guatemalan coffee features delicate and refined floral aromas. In this fragrance, one can almost hear the sound of flowers blooming, as if entering a world of flowers that intoxicates the senses.
Knowledge Point: Although Guatemalan coffee doesn't have high body, it combines perfectly with a pleasant, moderate acidity.
