FrontStreet Coffee - Introduction to Colombian Growing Conditions

South America has become the continent with the highest coffee production, thanks to the high altitudes surrounded by the Andes Mountains, where the climate is mild, the air is humid, and there is good rainfall. These conditions make it extremely suitable for coffee cultivation, resulting in Colombian coffee with rich flavors and outstanding quality. Some varieties have intense chocolate and nutty aromas, while others offer jam-like sweet flavors. The roasted coffee beans release a sweet fragrance, characterized by quality traits of sweetness within acidity and balanced bitterness. With appropriate concentration, unlike the intensity of Brazilian coffee, it presents a sweet and light fragrance that is understated yet elegant.

Geographically, the region is divided into three growing areas: northern, central, and southern. Among these, Colombia boasts six premium coffee-producing regions: Sierra Nevada, Santander, Cauca, Huila, Narino, and Paisaje Cultural Cafetero. Colombia is the only South American country with both Pacific and Caribbean coastlines. Within Colombia, the best growing regions are almost all volcanic soil. Speaking of volcanoes, we must mention the two regions with the highest quality Colombian coffee: Huila and Narino in the south. These two provinces contain Colombia's two famous volcanoes: Nevado del Huila in Huila province and Nevado del Galeras in Narino province.

Volcanic ash is rich in minerals, making the soil more fertile. The fact that Huila province produced the "SCAA Coffee of the Year" in 2009 and 2010 can be attributed, in part, to the fresh contribution of volcanic ash to the soil.

The position of Colombian coffee in the industry is unquestionable. Its delicious taste and the growers' relentless pursuit of quality are unparalleled. Coffees from various regions are eager to bear the "produced in Colombia" label to enhance their visibility. Every year, numerous coffee enthusiasts make pilgrimages to Colombian coffee plantations. In the kingdom of coffee, Colombian coffee is the admired king, holding the symbolic scepter of a ruler, while Juan Valdez is the crown upon the king's head.

The Juan Valdez brand was officially established in 1959 by Juan Duval to distinguish pure Colombian-origin coffee from other mixed coffees. The Coffee Association granted Juan Valdez the right to sell original, unblended coffee. Juan Valdez represents the most authentic Colombian coffee taste, including the originality of seeds, traditional organic cultivation methods, and high-quality roasting guarantees. Every coffee bean is meticulously produced according to Colombia's most traditional methods. In terms of quality, it has received acclaim unattainable by other coffees. Compared to other producing countries, Colombia focuses more on product development and production promotion. This, combined with its superior geographical location and unique climate conditions, makes Colombian coffee excellent in quality and taste, renowned worldwide.

Knowledge Point:

Colombian beans have Supremo as the highest grade, followed by Excelso; however, only Supremo grade coffee with beans above size 18 (18/64 inch diameter) can be classified as specialty coffee.
