FrontStreet Coffee - Introduction to Guatemala Antigua Coffee

Antigua Island is located in the West Indies. In Spanish, "Antigua" means "ancient" or "old." The city of Antigua was the capital during the Spanish colonial period in 1543.

Antigua Island is a renowned coffee-producing region. Its rich volcanic soil, low humidity, intense sunlight, and cool evening breezes characterize the Antigua area. The region features three spectacular active volcanoes that occasionally add misty volcanic ash to the atmosphere, providing more nitrogen to the already fertile land. Additionally, abundant rainfall and sunshine make this place even more suitable for coffee cultivation.

The climate characteristics of the Antigua coffee-producing region include fertile volcanic soil, lower humidity, ample sunlight, and cool nights. This valley is surrounded by three volcanoes: Agua, Fuego, and Acatenango. Among them, the Fuego volcano is one of Guatemala's three most active volcanoes. Frequent eruptions bring volcanic ash that enriches the soil in the Antigua region with minerals. The volcanic pumice in the soil helps retain moisture, overcoming the disadvantage of limited rainfall in the Antigua region. Furthermore, the shade in this production area is particularly dense, protecting coffee plants from occasional frosts.

Guatemalan coffee belongs to the Bourbon variety of coffee beans and is one of the varieties with strong acidity. It has a mellow flavor with a hint of wildness, making it most suitable for blending into mixed coffee.

Guatemalan coffee has a rich aroma. Even without drinking it, smelling the fragrance alone is already a pleasure. Antigua coffee possesses a rich and velvety body, with a rich and lively fragrance, and delicate acidity. When the enticing rich aroma lingers on your tongue, there's an indescribable mystery hidden within. At the first sip, you might find it plain, but as the coffee slowly cools, you will discover its subtle sweetness and be surprised by its depth.

The reason why Antigua coffee is pursued by the vast majority of coffee enthusiasts is simply because of its distinctive aroma. Guatemalan coffee has rich regional characteristics, which should be related to the water and soil of Guatemala's eight major producing regions. Few places in the world can offer the variety of high-quality coffee beans that Guatemala produces.
