FrontStreet Coffee - Introduction to Uganda Coffee

Opening up the global coffee production map, today our public account will take you to Uganda in inland Africa to taste the high-quality coffee produced in the Elgon mountainous area in its northeastern region. Compared to the Ethiopia we're familiar with, Ugandan coffee presents completely different flavors, highlighting its distinctive regional characteristics.

Uganda, located in the Great Lakes region of eastern central Africa, is almost entirely situated on the East African Plateau. Churchill praised it as the "Pearl of Africa." But Uganda is anything but "dry"—far from our stereotypical impression of barren Africa. Lake Victoria, the world's second-largest freshwater lake, has 42.8% of its waters within Uganda's borders, and the Nile River also originates here. Although the equator crosses Uganda, due to its high terrain, crisscrossing rivers, and numerous lakes, Uganda is known as the "Plateau Water Country." These unique natural conditions create the foundation for Uganda's coffee cultivation.

More than a hundred years ago, European colonizers brought coffee cultivation. Uganda's coffee production currently ranks eighth in the world and second in Africa,仅次于 Ethiopia. In the past few decades, coffee has risen to become Uganda's most important pillar industry, accounting for 20% of the country's total foreign trade export value. Coffee export is its main source of foreign exchange income. This is a country that lives on coffee—one-fifth of Ugandans, approximately 8 million people, rely on coffee cultivation for their livelihood. However, the vast majority of coffee grown by Ugandan farmers is of the Robusta variety, which is of poor quality and can only be purchased by multinational companies for commercial mass production.

What made Uganda famous is the Arabica variety, which accounts for less than 10% of its production. The best Ugandan coffee is produced in the Elgon mountainous area along the Kenyan border in the northeast, the Bugisu mountainous area, and the Rwenzori mountainous area in the west. These can be harvested from January to February each year.

Uganda's coffee grading is the same as Kenya's, with AA grade being the best. This grading indicates that the coffee beans are uniform in size.

Coffee Grading System

AA Plus (AA+): AA grade with exceptionally good cup quality (flavor, mouthfeel)

AA: Screen size 17-18

AB: Screen size 15-16, accounts for the majority of coffee production

C: Screen size smaller than AB grade

TT: Lighter beans blown out by air classifiers from AA and AB grade beans

T: Lighter beans blown out by air classifiers from C grade beans

E: Elephant Bean, large mutant beans where two beans are combined, also known as Elephant ear

UG: Those that do not meet the above standards

PB: Peaberry, classified by shape

Knowledge Point:

Like Congo, Uganda is also a place of origin for Robusta coffee. As Africa's second-largest coffee exporting country, Uganda's Robusta exports account for 7% of global production.
