Located in eastern Africa and spanning the equator, Uganda is bordered by Kenya to the east, Tanzania and Rwanda to the south, Congo to the west, and South Sudan to the north, covering a total area of 241,550 square kilometers.

Most regions of Uganda feature a tropical plateau climate and tropical savanna climate, which is mild and cool with an average annual temperature of 18°C. The year is divided into two dry seasons and two rainy seasons. March to May is the major rainy season, October to December is the minor rainy season, with an average annual precipitation of 1000-1400 millimeters.

Ugandan coffee exhibits deep mature fruit aromas, red wine-like flavors, full body, rich fragrance, and intense juice-like mouthfeel. It is somewhat similar to certain low-toned Kenyan beans, though it also carries a mild earthy note, making it significantly different in flavor profile from other coffee-producing countries in East Africa.

Uganda primarily cultivates two major coffee varieties: Robusta and Arabica.

Robusta varieties are grown in low-altitude areas in central, eastern, western, and southeastern Uganda, at altitudes up to 1,200 meters. Arabica varieties are cultivated in the highland areas on the slopes of Mount Elgon in the east and in the southwestern regions including Mt. Rwenzori and Mt. Muhabura (at altitudes of 1,500-2,300 meters).

Although Uganda is a major producer of Robusta, it still offers quality Arabica beans such as Typica, SL14, and SL28. Kenyan coffee gained worldwide fame due to SL28 and SL34, leading the Ugandan government to vigorously promote these varieties by distributing SL seeds to farmers.

Among these, SL14 not only offers excellent flavor but also possesses drought resistance and can be harvested just two years after planting, making it particularly suitable for farmers' needs. Common processing methods for Ugandan coffee include natural and washed processing.

The washed processing method involves using a depulper to separate the outer skin and most pulp from the coffee beans after harvest. The beans with their parchment intact are then placed in a clean water tank, where they soak in water to ferment and remove the remaining pulp layer.

The natural processing method begins with removing unqualified floating beans, followed by sun-drying. During this process, the fresh cherries are continuously turned to prevent fermentation or mold growth, achieving a very clean and rich flavor profile.

Knowledge point: Like Congo, Uganda is also an origin of Robusta coffee. As Africa's second-largest coffee exporting country, Uganda's Robusta exports account for seven percent of global production.
