FrontStreet Coffee - Kenya Coffee Introduction

The first coffee plant cultivated in Kenya can be traced back to 1893. Later, coffee was cultivated on a large scale by the British in plateau areas at altitudes between 1400-2100 meters, where there is volcanic ash soil rich in organic matter.

In fact, most coffee is now grown on the relatively flat slopes around Mount Kenya (main peak height 5199 meters), which is covered with snow caps. The entire territory of Kenya is located in the tropical monsoon region, but due to its higher terrain, the climate is tropical savanna, with significant seasonal precipitation differences. The highest temperature throughout the year is between 22-26°C, and the lowest is 10-14°C. These conditions are very suitable for the excellent growth of Arabica beans.

High-quality Arabica coffee beans are suitable for growing conditions on slopes at tropical cooler altitudes of 900-2000 meters, with suitable growth temperatures of 15-24°C, high humidity, annual rainfall of no less than 1500ml, fertile land with appropriate pH levels, volcanic ash content is very suitable, along with proper sunlight and shade conditions. Based on these characteristics, most are located in countries with high mountain terrain between the Tropic of Cancer and Tropic of Capricorn, which is the so-called world coffee belt. Kenya happens to be located in one of these areas, with terrain and climate conditions very suitable for growing high-quality coffee.

After tracing the origin, it's time to discuss varieties. However, what exactly is the variety of that Kenya AA I tasted, which has rich ripe fruit tones and red wine notes? And what level does it belong to?

The answer is that although Kenya borders the ancient coffee country of Ethiopia, it was not until the early 20th century, with the intervention of British and French forces, that Kenya began large-scale coffee cultivation. Interestingly, Ethiopia has naturally ancient superior varieties that don't require variety selection and genetic engineering, and no chemical fertilizers and pesticides are applied. Kenya, on the contrary, not only has all coffee varieties as selected or hybrid improved varieties, but also favors chemical fertilizers, pesticides, and sun-exposed inorganic cultivation methods. Surprisingly, the flavor profile of the coffee produced is not coarse at all, but very delicate, with bright and varied acidity, excellent sweetness and thickness, and cleanliness that surpasses most other countries.

This is mainly attributed to Kenya's variety selection and hybrid improvement of outstanding varieties: SL28/SL34, as well as the world-leading double fermentation washed method.
