FrontStreet Coffee - Colombian Coffee Introduction

Colombia Finca Santuario

For many years, Finca Santuario has been a leader in technology and cultivation methods within Colombia's specialty coffee farms, with the key figure being the farm owner Camilo Merizalde.

Camilo was born in Valle de Cauca, Colombia. From childhood, he often visited nearby coffee farms and watched adults process coffee. After graduating from high school, he decided to study in the United States. After graduation, he worked as a manager at a Colombian food and beverage factory in the US, often having opportunities to return to his hometown Colombia to purchase green coffee beans. During this time, Camilo began to contemplate why Colombian coffee often couldn't compare in quality with African and Central American varieties, and why people generally didn't consider Colombia among the specialty coffee-producing countries.

During this period, Camilo began researching and reading books about coffee cultivation in the United States, hoping to grow specialty coffee that would amaze the world. At the same time, Camilo continuously searched for farms with excellent microclimate environments in Colombia. Finally, in 2000, he found what he considered the most excellent agricultural land in the Cauca province of Colombia. Camilo immediately began various large and small renovation projects on the farm, preparing to realize his ideal coffee farm concept in this estate named Finca Santuario.

Caturra was introduced from Brazil in the 1960s and currently accounts for 45-50% of Colombia's production, having replaced the earliest Typica. Most Colombian farms now adopt a mixed cultivation model of 70% Caturra and 30% Colombia, with delicious Typica no longer seen. The overall coffee variety configuration in Colombia roughly shows Caturra at 50%, Colombia at 30%, and Typica at 20%. Colombia has rich topography, low latitude, and high altitude, providing excellent conditions for growing specialty coffee. Colombia's coffee regions are located between 3 and 8 degrees north latitude, belonging to the low-latitude coffee belt, allowing for two harvests per year. From south to north, ripe coffee can be harvested almost every month.

Knowledge Point: Compared to other producing countries, Colombia is more concerned with product development and production promotion. This, combined with its superior geographical and climatic conditions, makes Colombian coffee high-quality, delicious, and renowned worldwide.
