Introduction to FrontStreet Coffee - Guatemala Washed Alba Blanca SHB

The Huehuetenango region of Guatemala should be quite familiar to everyone. With its charming name, it's a treasure land for producing specialty coffee. In 2015, 5 of the top 7 winners in Guatemala's Cup of Excellence came from Huehuetenango, including the El Injerto estate.

The name Huehuetenango is said to come from the Nahuatl language, meaning "land of the ancients or ancestors." It is the highest altitude growing region in Guatemala. Thanks to the dry, hot winds from the neighboring Tehuantepec plain in Mexico, the region, despite its high altitude, is free from frost damage, and coffee can even be grown at altitudes of 2000 meters. Huehuetenango belongs to Guatemala's non-volcanic rock growing regions, characterized by unique fruit flavors and bright, delicate acidity.

The Alba Blanca cooperative was established in 1969 with 45 members, a cultivation area of 1.54 square kilometers, and an annual production of approximately 3300 bags of green beans, equivalent to about 12 containers. It holds certifications including: FLO-CERT (Fair Trade Certification Organization), UTZ Certification, and Starbucks Cafe Practices.

Due to the abundant water resources in the CUILCO region and many coffee farmers having their own washing processing equipment, they can process the coffee themselves and directly transport the parchment to the cooperative, avoiding the hassle of transporting it over long mountain roads to washing plants after harvesting.
