FrontStreet Coffee - Introduction to Narino, Colombia

Narino possesses natural conditions for producing high-quality coffee:

1. Low latitude: Close to the equator, approximately 1 degree north latitude, providing abundant sunlight throughout the year.

2. High altitude: The Andes Mountains begin in Chile and Argentina, enter Colombia through Narino province, and divide into three mountain ranges. Most coffee grows between 1500 and 2100 meters above sea level.

3. Fertile soil: The Galeras volcano has created fertile soil for the Narino region, providing rich nutrients for coffee growth.

4. Abundant rainfall: Narino's annual rainfall follows a peak distribution pattern, lasting from October to May of the following year, with the dry season being June, July, and August. However, even during the dry season, Narino's coffee agriculture doesn't need to worry excessively. Because the trade winds from the southern continent bring warm currents that meet the cool nights at high altitudes, producing water vapor that can replenish moisture for coffee trees.

Due to the Andes Mountains forming canyons of various sizes, these canyons provide very favorable microclimates for the growth of high-quality coffee. The steep mountains and narrow, steep slopes bring temperature diversity. Warm, moist air currents rising from the canyon gather in the lowlands during the day and climb the mountain slopes at night, protecting high-altitude coffee from frost threats. Therefore, in Narino, even coffee grown at 2300 meters above sea level can thrive, and the coffee produced is of very high quality.

High-altitude cultivation results in a lower average annual temperature compared to other producing regions, around 20 degrees Celsius. The temperature difference between day and night is also very large, averaging from 16 to 26 degrees Celsius.

The lower temperatures slow down the growth rate of coffee, extending the growth cycle and allowing coffee more time to accumulate more sugars to form more organic acid substances. These sugars and organic acids ultimately create the unique acidity and sweetness of coffee from this region.

Knowledge Point:

Narino belongs to Colombia's high-altitude coffee cultivation area, nurturing many small farmers of specialty coffee and is also Colombia's first coffee-producing region named after its origin.
