FrontStreet Coffee - Introduction to Costa Rican Coffee
Costa Rica is geographically located in Central America. It features beautiful tropical rainforests, warm and cheerful people, and coffee renowned for its excellent quality in the global market. Combining natural resources, people have integrated agriculture with commercial culture, launching "coffee tourism" projects in recent years that have attracted many enthusiastic tourists.
Tropical climate, high altitude, and fertile volcanic soil provide ideal conditions for growing coffee in Costa Rica, so most coffee plantations are situated on high mountains. The flavor profile of coffee varies with altitude. Coffee produced in higher altitude regions has stronger acidity, while in lower altitude regions, the coffee has a balanced sweet-bitter taste. Specialty coffee SHB grows at altitudes above 1500 meters, where volcanic ash soil provides abundant nutrients.
Only Arabica coffee trees are cultivated in Costa Rica. Through improvement, the quality of coffee beans has become better and more stable. To facilitate harvesting, coffee trees are maintained at around 2 meters in height through continuous pruning. The coffee we consume comes from the flavor released by the seeds within the fruit when brewed with water. After harvesting raw coffee beans, they must undergo removal of skin, pulp, and seed membrane, as well as sun exposure before the seeds (i.e., coffee beans) can be roasted. Some processes can be replaced by machines, significantly increasing coffee production speed. However, coffee harvesting cannot be replaced by any machine and must be done manually.
Costa Rican coffee beans are full-bodied, have ideal acidity, and possess a unique, intense aroma.
S.H.B. (Strictly Hard Bean) refers to extremely hard beans grown at altitudes above 1500 meters, signifying high-quality Costa Rican coffee. These extra-hard coffee beans, suitable for medium and dark roasting, have strong acidity and captivating aromas. Costa Rican SHG coffee typically features full-bodied beans, clear flavor profiles, bright acidity, and ideal viscosity. The robust flavor creates a long-lasting aftertaste that lingers in the throat, making it unforgettable.
Knowledge Point
Why do few other countries use honey processing methods? Besides being easily contaminated and prone to mold during the process, requiring constant monitoring and continuous turning to avoid undesirable fermentation flavors, it heavily depends on local weather conditions. The weather must be dry with sufficient sunlight; otherwise, honey processing is not suitable.
