FrontStreet Coffee - Introduction to Guatemala Coffee

Guatemala borders Mexico to the north, Honduras and El Salvador to the south, the Caribbean Sea to the east, and the Pacific Ocean to the west. Blessed with unique geography surrounded by mountains and seas, Guatemala boasts tropical rainforests, volcanic geology, highland valleys, and diverse microclimates. Primarily agricultural in economy, coffee stands as the main agricultural product. Guatemalan coffee once enjoyed the reputation of being the world's finest quality coffee, with coffee beans characterized by their full body and delicious balance.

Few places in the world can match the variety of premium coffee beans produced by Guatemala. Guatemalan coffee beans are renowned for their elegant and lively acidity, clean flavor without impurities, distinct layers, as well as notes of green apple acidity, berry fragrance, jasmine floral notes, orange peel aroma, green pepper notes, fruity sweetness, chocolate sweetness, and even smoky aftertaste. Such rich regional flavors are attributed to the unique natural conditions of the producing areas, including different climate changes in each region, fertile soil formed by volcanoes, abundant natural water resources, high mountain ranges, and shady forests.

Coffee was introduced to Guatemala in 1750 by Jesuit priests. By the late 19th century, German colonists had significantly developed the local coffee industry. For over a century, coffee has been the economic lifeline of Guatemala. The crisscrossing mountain terrain, mountainous areas and highlands formed by several volcanoes over 3,000 meters high, and the interplay of the nearby Atlantic and Pacific oceans create more than 300 microclimates. These geographical factors have given rise to eight clearly defined producing regions, each with its unique flavor characteristics. The main varieties include Bourbon, Typica, and Caturra. Guatemala produces high-quality, high-altitude, strictly hard coffee beans from Central America, ranking as the world's 9th largest coffee-producing country.

Guatemalan coffee can be considered the crown jewel of Central American specialty coffee, meaning that the cupping scores of coffee produced in Guatemala's various regions are more likely to reach 88+ compared to neighboring countries.

Guatemalan coffee typically exhibits distinct fresh floral notes and clean fruit flavors. The acidity is gentle, with medium body and a lingering clean aftertaste. The cleanliness of the flavor profile is a crucial measure of coffee quality.

Guatemalan coffee often presents surprising complexity. From large estates to small farms nestled on gentle slopes, coffee from the same micro-producing region can exhibit different flavor expressions.

Knowledge point: Guatemala boasts more than 300 microclimates throughout its territory, considered the highest in the world.
