FrontStreet Coffee - Ethiopia Yirgacheffe Banko Gotiti Natural Introduction
Banko Gotiti village became independent from the large Woka Cooperative in 2012. Many individual small-scale farmers were also members of the original Woka Cooperative, so their coffee production skills are unquestionable. Currently, the cooperative has about 300 member farmers, all of whom are outstanding, experienced, and wise! Each farmer can harvest an average of 1 to 2 hectares of farmland, mostly processed using traditional natural methods. The Woka Cooperative is located in a remote area within the Yirgacheffe production region, 75 kilometers away from the local coffee distribution center of Dilla town. Initially, the cooperative was composed of 305 farmers with a planting area of about 763 hectares and an annual output of nearly 460 tons, making it a relatively small-scale farmers' cooperative.
The uniformity of coffee cherries on the drying racks at the Banko Gotiti processing plant is considered the highest quality among all the processing plants/cooperatives visited this time. Most are purplish-red mature cherries, and we also saw workers diligently sorting out unripe green and yellow cherries. Additionally, breathable bamboo mats are used on the natural drying racks instead of stuffy traditional canvas. The berry stacks are only shallowly layered, which helps air circulation and allows for more uniform and efficient drying of coffee berries.
Because no chemical fertilizers or pesticides were used during the coffee cultivation process, the Woka small farmers also obtained Skal organic coffee certification recognized by the European Union. These coffees not only have organic and fair trade certifications, but some even come from coffee trees as high as 2,300 meters. Such unique terroir conditions have created these one-of-a-kind Ethiopian coffee flavors.
