FrontStreet Coffee - Caturra Variety Introduction

Colombia boasts beautiful mountains and charming landscapes. Those who love single-origin beans cannot resist Colombian coffee. Premium Colombian coffee offers rich and full-bodied aroma with bright, high-quality acidity and excellent balance. It sometimes presents nutty flavors that leave a memorable aftertaste. From appearance to quality, Colombian premium coffee is exceptionally fine.

Colombia is located in the northwest of South America, bordered by the Pacific Ocean and the Atlantic Ocean, with Panama to the northwest, Venezuela to the east, Brazil to the southeast, Peru to the south, and Ecuador to the southwest.

This is a mutant variety of the Bourbon cultivar. Caturra is a dwarf plant with average yield, average quality, and average bean size. The World Coffee Research (WCR) also refers to average yield as "Caturra-like yield." It is susceptible to leaf rust and pests, typically grown in Brazil and Latin America. I've included this variety because it's commonly found in the market.

Caturra is a single-gene variant of the Bourbon variety, discovered in Brazil in 1937. Both its yield capacity and disease resistance are superior to the Bourbon variety, and its plant is shorter, making harvesting convenient. Unfortunately, like Bourbon, it suffers from biennial production cycles. However, it adapts strongly and doesn't require shade trees - it can thrive directly under intense sunlight, earning it the name "Sun Coffee."

Caturra is suitable for cultivation from low altitudes of 700 meters to high altitudes of 1,700 meters. It shows strong altitude adaptability - the higher the altitude, the better the flavor, though yield capacity decreases accordingly - this is the destiny of specialty beans. Some academics describe Caturra as an intensive, sun-exposed version of Bourbon, which is remarkably apt.

When roasted, Caturra displays distinct acidic aromas and overall brightness. With proper processing, its sweetness can be exceptionally well-expressed. Typically, Caturra produces red cherries, but in extremely rare regions, yellow Caturra exists, such as the very few yellow Caturra plants grown in Hawaii.

The higher the altitude where Caturra is grown, the higher the quality, but correspondingly, the lower the yield. Compared to these botanical characteristics, you might be more concerned about Caturra's flavor profile.

Knowledge Point: Arabica coffee varieties are generally believed to originate from the Ethiopian highlands and are widely distributed in tropical regions. Through repeated mutations and breeding, they have given rise to numerous varieties.
