FrontStreet Coffee - Arabica Variety Introduction
Coffee varieties are generally divided into Arabica, Robusta, and Liberica.
The most familiar to everyone is Arabica, followed by Robusta, which shouldn't be unfamiliar. The third variety, Liberica, is rarely heard of. This is because Liberica typically has low production or poor quality, so it's often overlooked. Therefore, I won't discuss it in detail here.
Arabica coffee beans originate from Ethiopia. They have a mixed aroma of faint jasmine, ripe melon, and various citrus fruits, and are known for their delicate balance between bitterness and sweetness.
Arabica coffee has very demanding growing conditions. Fertile soil, humid air, moderate sunlight, and shade are all necessary factors for high quality. Due to weaker resistance to pests and diseases and lower annual yields, high-altitude areas are more suitable for cultivation. Especially, Arabica coffee beans grown above 1,500 meters have the best quality. Arabica green beans have a dark, narrow appearance. High-altitude Arabica, recognized as the highest quality, is rich in aroma and has complex layers.
Nature is truly magical. More stringent growing conditions naturally produce better quality fruits. This is probably nature's gift.
Arabica beans originally came from the Ethiopian plateau. After years of breeding and improvement, they now account for three-quarters of global coffee production. Among these coffee beans, only about 10% can be certified as specialty coffee. These Arabica beans have balanced flavor and aroma. The three famous coffee beans - Hawaiian Kona, Jamaican Blue Mountain, and Yemen Mocha - belong to this Arabica variety.
Arabica beans have rich aromas and can display more floral, fruity, and nutty flavors at different roast levels, with noticeable acidity and sweetness. Robusta beans have lighter aromas, strong grain scents, and stronger bitterness.
Generally, people have higher acceptance of Arabica bean flavors because Arabica has richer aromas. It's also easily affected by different factors like altitude, soil, and climate conditions, which influence bean growth and flavor output. Therefore, although they're all called Arabica, beans from different origins can have completely different tastes!
Knowledge point: "Arabica" is not synonymous with good coffee. Even within the Arabica variety, there are grade differences.
