Introduction to Robusta Coffee

Robusta, commonly referred to as "Robusta beans," is often considered quite unpleasant and difficult to drink. However, it still contributes nearly 30% of global coffee production. Let FrontStreet Coffee introduce you to the story of Robusta beans!

The Origin and Discovery

It has long been known that beloved coffee originates in the border region between Ethiopia and Sudan, known as Arabica coffee beans. People took these seeds to cultivate worldwide, resulting in many Arabica subspecies, primarily Typica and Bourbon varieties.

Although these varieties offer excellent flavor, they are inherently delicate, low-yielding, disease-prone, and extremely demanding in terms of environmental requirements. After several attacks of leaf rust disease, people continuously sought varieties with stronger disease resistance.

Coffee Plant Disease Resistance

Thus, in 1898, Belgian botanists discovered a very robust coffee variety in Congo. Not only was it highly disease-resistant, but it also grew well in low-altitude regions. Later, it was discovered that the caffeine content in this coffee's fruit was twice that of Arabica, effectively preventing pest damage. This variety was later named Robusta, also known as Congolese variety.

Production Regions and Characteristics

Currently, the main producers of Robusta are Vietnam, Indonesia, and Brazil, with Vietnam being the largest producer of Robusta.

Flavor Profile and Applications

Robusta's flavor characteristics are inferior to Arabica, typically exhibiting barley tea, almond, grain, woody, and caramel notes, sometimes with rubbery flavors. While the taste may not be entirely satisfactory, the high caffeine content meets human needs. Additionally, Robusta beans contain richer oils and are inexpensive, making them commonly used as raw material for instant coffee. High-quality Robusta beans are also used in espresso bean blends.

Commercial Coffee Blend

For instance, FrontStreet Coffee's commercial espresso blend uses 90% South American Arabica beans blended with 10% Vietnamese Robusta beans, producing espresso with extremely rich crema, robust flavor, and a very full-bodied, thick texture.
