FrontStreet Coffee - Mandheling Coffee Bean Introduction

Among the most renowned coffee origins in Asia, the islands of the Malay Archipelago stand out, with Indonesia's Sumatra Mandheling being particularly celebrated worldwide. Arabica coffee grown on mountain slopes at elevations of 750-1,500 meters features rich aroma, full body, and intense flavor, especially its unique chocolate and syrupy notes that leave a lasting impression on every sip.

Mandheling coffee is produced around Lake Toba in northern Sumatra, Indonesia, and is therefore also known as "Sumatra coffee."

In the 17th century, the Dutch introduced Arabica coffee seedlings to Ceylon (today's Sri Lanka) and Indonesia. In 1877, a massive disaster struck the Indonesian islands when coffee leaf rust disease nearly destroyed all coffee trees. Local farmers had to abandon the Arabica coffee trees they had cultivated for years and introduced disease-resistant Robusta coffee trees from Africa. However, a small amount of Arabica remained in Sumatra's Mandheling region, which is the Mandheling coffee we can enjoy today.

These trees are planted on mountain slopes at elevations of 750-1,500 meters. The mysterious and unique Sumatra has endowed Mandheling coffee with rich aroma, full body, and intense flavor.

The appearance of Mandheling coffee beans can be described as the ugliest among all coffee beans, but their flavor is exceptionally pure, considered one of the world's most mellow coffees. It has a very rich flavor - fragrant, bitter, and full-bodied, with a slight acidity. When tasting Mandheling, you can feel a distinct smoothness on your palate. At the same time, it has lower acidity, with lively micro-acidity mixed with rich aroma, and subtle chocolate and syrupy notes that allow you to easily experience the lively factors within its gentle richness.

Additionally, this coffee has a faint earthy aroma, which some describe as herbal fragrance. Premium vintage beans (stored in cellars for three years before export, processed through special techniques, also known as aged Mandheling) have their acidic components transformed into sugars through maturation, making the coffee rounder, sweeter to drink, with a longer aftertaste.

Knowledge Point: Most coffee grows in the equatorial zone between 25° north and south of the Tropics of Cancer and Capricorn. The coffee growing belt and country of origin have a tremendous impact on its flavor.
