Robusta is recognized by many for its unique coffee aroma (some describe this distinctive flavor as "Robusta flavor"). Due to its high yield, caffeine content that is twice that of Arabica coffee, and the fact that it doesn't need to be grown at high altitudes or require shade trees, Robusta is extensively cultivated in coffee-producing countries. Currently, Robusta accounts for over forty percent of the world's coffee production. The name Robusta means "strong."

Robusta coffee is typically used in blends because Robusta beans have rich oils and unique dimensions and body, which can make espresso coffee taste fuller and richer. Of course, quite a bit of Robusta coffee is also used to make instant coffee.

Take a sip of 100% Robusta coffee, and you'll immediately know that its taste is very astringent and extremely unpleasant. It emits an aroma known as "Robusta flavor," similar to the smell of burnt wheat, with not only strong bitterness but also earthy and musty notes. Therefore, it's not difficult to understand why it's used as a "filler" in canned coffee, instant coffee, and low-quality regular coffee.

Robusta was once harshly criticized as "worse than the lowest-grade Brazilian Santos coffee." Although it cannot be consumed directly, when mixed with Arabica, it still has its uses. While its acidity and sweetness are inferior to Arabica, its high concentration and intense bitterness make it an indispensable variety for industrial coffee applications. Moreover, Robusta also has strong disease resistance, showing excellent resistance to coffee leaf rust, which is a major enemy of coffee.

Robusta production accounts for 30%~40% of the world's coffee bean production, with its main producing countries being Vietnam, Indonesia, Côte d'Ivoire... and don't forget Brazil. In recent years, Brazil has been committed to Robusta production, with Robusta accounting for 30% of its total production. Surprisingly, Brazil has become a major producing country competing with Vietnam for the top position.

Knowledge point: Most coffee grows in the equatorial zone between 25° north and south latitude. The coffee growing belt and country of origin have a huge impact on its flavor.
